TiT Incubator to TiT Fruiting Chamber Tek
    #5437993 - 03/24/06 11:36 AM (17 years, 10 months ago)

So i haven't seen a tek about turning a TiT Incubator into a fruiting chamber.  I thought it would help out a lot of new guys so here goes.

1. Take the lid off of your TiT.  Draw a rectangle on the top that will be cut off.

2. Take some plastic wrap and tape it so it is airtight over the opening like so.

3.  You didn't forget to tape the sides of your case if your doing one right?  We cant have any of that nasty side pinning going on.

4. You'll now need Fresh Air Exchange (FAE) and humidity.  I used two aquarium pumps that i picked up at wally world for 10 bucks each.  One will be elevated on the outside to pump in new fresh air.  The tubes of this pump will go into a cup of water which will create humidity.  (a solution of 10:1 water to h202 is recommended)  Then i have a pump on the inside of the tub which pumps C02 to the outside of the tub.  Each one of my pumps has 2 hoses.

5.  Now we cant forget about light.  I have my grow in a closet.  So i like to have my light concealed.  So i went and created the lightbox.  The lightbox is a box with one side cutoff with a lamp kit through the top.  You can pick up this lamp kit at home depot for 7 bucks.

outside of the lightbox

inside of the lightbox

when all is said and done, this is what it looks like.

Through Musher_420's excellent advice, a flourescent lightbulb should be used so heat doesnt build up.

Don't forget to lower the temp of your water heater to around 74 degrees.  A recommended light cycle of 12 to 16 hours a day is recommended.  Get as much FAE to your cakes or casing as possible.  And keep the humidity at 95% for cakes, 80% for casings.

Happy Growing

Simple and easy!

The cool thing about it, is that, as you buy two tubs, you can use the spare lid as a fruiting chamber lid and still have the other one for the setup when its in the incubator stage.

thats pretty cool I have seen a number of different models for this type of deal. The others used a third tub dropped down in the other with holes or a filter on the side to get the co2 out since its at the bottom but since you have a pump doing it that ought to work perfect.

My friend will quite possibly implement this, as he is just getting into growing again and isn't ready yet to bust out ultrasonic humidifiers, martha closets, and such.

Quick question: If one has a system like this maintaining humiditiy, is it then necessary to continue misting casings? Wouldn't all of the moisture the mushrooms require beyond that which is soaked into the casing be obtained from the air?

Nice stealthy set up.
I would be a bit concerned about an incandescent light bulb in a cardboard box though.. Maybe use another tub with the bottom partially cut out ?
But all in all a great Job!

it shouldnt be necessary.  ill probably still mist maybe once a day for good measure.

SO i just had this setup running and went back to check my temps. DOH. The temp was sticking around 86. I suggest using a larger box with some holes in it for the lightbox.

Dude. Just use a compact florescent bulb. They work great, use less energy and put off almost no heat.

Yes, you are asking for trouble with that incandecent bulb.

Please for your own sake(and those who live with you) replace the bulb with a flourecent of some kind.

that and youll probably have to mist. I mist with my full auto. you could use something like a tropicaire to increase fruiting capacity by getting that cup out of there.

My TiT has translucent sides. I've been thinking about changing it from an incubator to a fruiting chamber just by moving it out of its dark closet into a room where it will receive indirect sunlight 12 hours/day (and turning down the heater of course).

Any drawbacks to this method? Does the fluorescent light have benefits over indirect sunlight?

are you using a casings or cakes? if its casings, you dont want the sides to pin so you want the sides of your case to be taped up/painted. The benefit of fluorescent light is a more concentrated unchanging light source as opposed to sunlight which comes and goes.

Sorry for the noob question: why don't I want the sides to pin?

well if you are doing a casing, you want the shrooms to grow up from the top, not the sides.
