getting ready to pasturize my straw

tomorow night i am going to prepare my straw, to inoculate with wbs. Few questions.
1. Do i mix in lime with my straw. I just read 1/2 tsp per gal. of water.
2. I shook my jars at around 20 %. Well !/2 of them came back great. The other 1/2 just seem to sit there. There is some growth, just real slow. Is this ok.
3. How many qts do i use per tote. I have 18 gal. rubbermade. probably going about 4-6 inched deep with my straw.
4. Will it colonize faster if i use more spawn.
5. What is the best casing mix for this. I have verm. peat and calc/carb. currently.
I need help soon guys as i plan to do this tomorow. thanks

1. Do i mix in lime with my straw. I just read 1/2 tsp per gal. of water? I don't.
2. I shook my jars at around 20 %. Well !/2 of them came back great. The other 1/2 just seem to sit there. There is some growth, just real slow. Is this ok? Does it smell odd?...They might just be stalling...give 'em a little shake and see what happens, it might just be a small build up of c02 in the jar.
3. How many qts do i use per tote. I have 18 gal. rubbermade. probably going about 4-6 inched deep with my straw. I use about 1qt of spawn to 1qt of straw...But everyone does it slightly different. Just don't put in not enough spawn, you don't want like 1 qt of spawn per pillowcase of straw :P
4. Will it colonize faster if i use more spawn. Yes. More spawn ratio = Faster colonization (less to colonize)
5. What is the best casing mix for this. I have verm. peat and calc/carb. currently. Sounds fine, should do great if you mix it all correctly.
Hope that helps.

Have to get the Ph just right...I don't mess with peat, it burned a lot of my casings, dealing w/ Ph always messed me up.
I just use verm. and coir, but it's not the best.
I'll look around to see if I can further help you with your Question.

id really appreciate it. I'm looking myself but having a hard time finding anything thats absolutely the right mix. how exactly do you test your casings ph. I have ph kit for hydro, and somewhere i have a soil ph test but ill have to look. Do you test the runoff?

OK heres is what is happening. i know I'm looking for 100 % colonization in my jars but exactly what is that?
1. Will i be able to see any seed in the jar? Do I let it get that far? Right now 1 have 6 jars that Have myc. through out the entire jars , but i can definitely see the seed still. They are also sticking together like a cake. I shook them again a few minutes ago. I hope that is ok? i figure they should recover here in a few days or so. But how far do i let the jars get as far as say being entirely consumed in white. Do i just want to see white through the jar, or do i want it to look as if it were packed in snow?
2 Now for the problem. I also have 6 qt jars the aren't doing what the other 6 are. Now all 12 were inoculated at the same time with the same syringe. they all started out the same. I let them get to what i thought was 20- 30 % and i shook them well. Now since these 6 have just kinda sat there. If you look close you can see some myc here and there. And 3 of the 6 have clumps of solid myc. stuck together. I kinda rolled them lightly today with the other 6 to see if i could stir something up.We will see. But I know little from experience and need someone to tell me what if any thing i am doing wrong. Am i just being impatient, it has been only 2 weeks? But i have time.
also i am still looking for a way to test the ph of my substrate and straw. What do you test, the runoff?

1. A fully colonized jar looks something like this That was a brown rice and quinna jar. You want the whole jar covered in white, it doesn't matter if you can see the seed or not, just as long as myc has run through the whole thing. 2.Some jars stall sometimes this is usually due to buildup of c02 in the jars, try loosing the lids a bit and tipping them on their sides, this usually helps dissipate the c02.
Heres a straw grow i did a few months ago its a 90 qt container, I have about 6 inches of straw in it and i put about 6 pint jars of myc into it, it only took about a week to fully colonize.

I think i took these pictures after about 3 days of mixing spawn in with the straw.

A simple straw technique is; use 1 cup of hydrated lime and bleach both per 10-12 gallons of hot tap water. Simply cut your straw into 1-3 inch pieces and and load up a tub or whatever with it. Knowing the tub size in gallons is very helpful. This way you can eye the water level, rather than measuring it. Add 1 cup of bleach evenly across the straw in the tub. Add a few gallons of hot tap water evenly across the straw so the bleach gets dispersed a bit. Then spread 1 cup of hydrated lime evenly across the straw in the tub and allow the lime to hydrate before adding the rest of the hot tap water. This way you don't get clouds of lime from adding the rest of the hot water in your eyes, mouth, exc. After the lime's hydrated simply spread another 7 or 8 gallons of hot tap water evenly across the straw till you come to a final volume of 10-12 gallons of water. Cover and allow to soak for an hour. After the hour is up, simply rotate the contents so the once up side of the straw is down. Then cover again and allow to soak until the contents are cool enough to handle by hand. Then simply ring out the straw with your cleaned or glooved hands till only a few drips of water come out from the ringing out. Load up your tubs or trays, pack evenly and spawn. Cover the trays or tubs LIGHTLY with foil and allow them to colonize for 2 weeks. Don't peep at any time before these 2 weeks are up. You'll only be allowing contaminate spores into the trays or tubs to ruin your project.

so what your saying is i can pasteurize my straw this way also. I was planning on pasteurizing it in water @ 10 for 1 1/2 hours but this way seems easier. Is there a difference as to which way is best. I have the stuff to do either way. Id prefer to do it the best way even if it does take a little longer.
Hey would me checking on my jars every night slow the growth inside. I guess what I'm asking is does the flash of light hurt, or slow growth i any way. I was just sitting there a few hours ago and thought of that. Pretty sure everything will be good to go by this weekend though.Good thing for spell check, I'm stoned as hell right now

well 8 dry ounces is shooting for alot considering your asking this question you must not be to advance into growing..so iam almost positive that you w ont be getting near 8 dry ounces..especially the way my grows without a casing layer been going..like 4 shrooms that are like 90 grams wet each..but id rather have a nice pinset instead of a few huge shrooms..So honestly i doubt youl lget that much..but you never know

OK I'm preparing the straw tonight after work. So what way is the best . Should i pasteurize with lime, or should i just boil it. I don't have hydrated lime i have calcium carbonate.
