TiT incubator problem
    #5436213 - 03/23/06 10:22 PM (17 years, 10 months ago)

Ok I was going to do the standard TiT and ordered an aquarium heater and got it today and its one that has to be tightened to the side/top of the tank so now im thinking because of this setback I will use a single bin and put a like kool aid type pitcher inside it with water and the fish tank heater in that and I have a setup planned to put a rack over top of the picther and have the jars on the rack so I am wondering if this will work ?

itll work but its more of a hassle and youll have to worry about contams. id say go with your original idea of a TiT. maybe theres a way to make the heater lay down?

Find out if it's submersible, if not, you could make a heat bomb with it and place it within the tub but i think youd be better off going to walmart and buying the submersible ones they have for cheap.

Ok what if i do this... I take the pitcher and fill it with rocks and attach the heater so its on the outside of the pitcher and then submerse that in water in a tub and set bricks up to go higher than the pitcher and put my incubater tub inside the other tub resting on the bricks and seal the two tubs together ? I would hate to waste the ten dollars i spent on this and go and fork out more for another heater when I already got one

I think I own that model I could be wrong but mines mines got the dial like you described, it should say right on the box if its submersible or not, got mine from wal-mart. What I've come to find out about these heaters though it takes a long time for them to heat up and once they do its dificult to get it set to the exact temperature. I was gonna go to petsmart and get a visi-therm I believe its called, a 300 watt heater for under twenty bucks and it has a scale and dial so you can preset it to the exact temperature.

If you get a visi-therm, get the stealth model. I had a glass visi-therm explode on me. Well worth the extra couple bucks. Most stores do not stock them, you may have to buy it online.

yea, you put the heat bomb in the tub with your jars.
A fan would be great if available (a small computer fan for example)
Contams shouldn't be too huge of a deal. Add some H2O2 to the water. If possible, seal the water vessel and the heater together to eliminate water loss and the chance of contams.

Petsmart also has a fully submersible model large enough for a TiT for right around 25 bucks. It also comes with suction cups so it sticks to the bottom of your tub rather easily. So far it has held 83/84 in my incubator with absolutely no issues.

With a blanket I am able to maintain 82/83 on the top layer and 83/84 on the bottom.

Its worth the couple dollars extra to get a good heater. Also the fully submersible one has the dial a temp. control you mentioned wanting.

Yea, a heatbomb will work just fine
If the heater is brand new, why not take it back and explain that you were really looking for a submers. heater for your fish tank?

I made a heat bomb and im running a test right now in a cooler , seems like a cooler would work well if I go with this idea, has only been in there for like 20 minutes and is at about 80 degrees
