Washing Dishes

I've been looking for a job now for a couple weeks, and the only place that has an opening so far is a restaurant where I'd be washing dishes. I know the guy that runs the place, and think it would be a pretty cool atmosphere (no jackass boss yelling over my shoulder). And the jobs I've had before were all pretty blow off (lifeguard, golf course), so I think washinng dishes would give me some perspective. It's also been a couple year since I've had any kind of cash flow, so I'm not really being picky.
What I'm wodering is what yall think who have experience with this. Was it just the worst experience of your life wouldn't do it again for any ammount of money? Or was it barable as long as you got to work with some cool folks?

If you can live on what they will pay you, and you think it's gonna be a laid back environment, I say do it.
The worst thing about being a dishwasher is washing dishes (duh). It can get kinda nasty, and your shoes can fill up with water. If you're working at a busy place, you're gonna want to take a shower when you get home, definitely.
But hey, if you work at a cool place, being a dishwasher ain't really that bad. I mean fuck it. You're a DISHWASHER. You'll probably be getting blazed in the walk-in freezer with one of the waitresses in under a week. SCORE!

Being a dish-washer at Pizza Hut was probably the funnest job I ever had.
Now if you have shitty machines or work at a really busy place I imagine it'd suck.

I wash dishes just about every day almost. I've washed them for four hours straight, onetime. At my job, we ALL do everything. Everyone does dishes, makes food, mops, everything else, etc. It's pretty fair most of the time. Actually, I like washing dishes, I get to step away from the lunch rush, and 'get in my zone' with no one to bother me. Word of advice, wear disposable gloves if you got them... easy on the hands with hot and bleach water.

I wash dishes! I'm a Chef's apprentice at the resort/hotel restaraunt. When, they want me to wash dishes I get $9/hr.
Its alright, but they have such a damn small washer. You can only fit so much in a time, its a real time waster. Then, you have all these other dirty dishes backing up.
While the clean dishes are drying, you need to stack them for the chefs and cooks. Not to mention thousands of pieces of silverware. You have to individually hand-sort, into forks, spoons, etc.
It can get damn hectic on really busy days. Oh yea, then you'll have to clean all that nasty dishwater, empty all that nasty ass trash, and mop everything. Clean the dishwasher itself and all the surfaces. Its a hell of a load of work for such little wages.
The only reason I'm doing it is its not very often when they need to me to, and I'm being profesionally trained as a chef. So, it works out. Good money too.

Syrup is a bitch to get off. So are jams..anything with a lot sugar.
Yea, they're right. Wear gloves. You'll get this big, steel scub thing you'll have to use and its hell on your hands.
But, the positive is that its awesome cause you're your own boss back there. No one really comes back there to tell you what to do. I come into work high most of the time. I can really focus then and get everything done really quick, so I can go eat or something. My bosses all smoke, so they don't care. Plus, I show up everyday, no sick days yet. So, they know I'm no slacker.
Fun job, just really tiring.

The worst is washing the metal pans after they've been on the warmer all day and the soups and whatever else we keep in them gets burned and stuck to the bottom. Steel wool is my friend.. Dishes ain't that bad.. suck it up and get your hands dirty, boys. Our restaurant does all the dishes by hand.. we have enough to justify a washer machine though, we just won't get one.

Well, it will have its sucky moments, sure. Trust me though, get a good pair of waterproof elbow high gloves, it's VERY KEY for washing tons of dishes. Also, be proud of your job, and what you do, no matter what it is. Stick it out, and move your way up through the company.. That's a good plan. Good luck

Yea, those bacon pans. There are like damn near a 100 of those things. I just let them soak. And then get steel wool and scrub it off easily and run through the machine. Yea, the gloves suck. I never use them...I can't grip for shit in them. My hands are all used to being cut up now, just all callused(sp?) over.
I'm also used to the water. That water is hot as hell, but eventually it doesn't bother you.
Yea, we just wash all the food off and srub the plates, cups, silverware down, and put 'em in rack and put it in the machine to get cleaned with a whole bunch of soaps and chemicals. Then, we take out the racks and let them air dry. Them, put em away.
Easy. I like my job.

The busy nights can be tough...so many coming through.
But, thats what I'm doing. Just working my way up. I actually enjoy working in the kitchens. Its fun, never gets boring, and pays pretty damn well.

Yeah dude! getting high before washing dishes rocks.. I love doing that.
Also, only me and you, all all other dish washers know the term 'fingering the sink' It really irks me when my coworkers put food in the sings, and I have to dig out that soggy, gross food, or shove it down the drain in a 'fingering' like motion..
Lol, this thread is dish washers united. Thank goodness I don't wash them all the time, and we really only have two big loads of dishes daily, the opening dishes, and the closing dishes.
I've never had a problem with slipping, and gloves.
Also for the new guy: get a good apron, no matter how pansy it looks, wet pants and shirt sucks

Yea, damn well get an apron. You'll be soaked. lol, I know fingerin' it.
I hate it when those bastards don't scrape their plates and you have to spray all that crap off and it gets everywhere and nasty as shit. Lazy fucks...
