fiber optic cable as light source?

could you use these as a light source? you could take a strand of cable, wrap it around the inside of the lid of the monotub, with a section of the strand that leads to an illumination point. If you have multiple tubs, you could lead all the strands to a central location. I have looked at illuminators online and they are quite expensive (average cost $150.00). Could one make a makeshift illuminator?

Fiber can be expensive, unless you're near a lucent tech depot and have a penchant for dumpster diving. Also, most FO cables depend on specific lasers to power them. You'd also have to worry about whether you were using long or short distance fiber.
However with a little ingenuity I'm pretty sure you could get something rigged... but getting the light spectrum right, that would be a toughie.
I'll stick with my mini-flourescents from home depot Cheap, and effective!

I have a big fiber optic cable, its nothing very fancy. Its used in Spa circuitry so they could have lights around the top without exposing it to electricity?
some shit like that, I think it would be to dim for mushrooms to grow but im not sure, if i aim one end of cable to the sun the other end glows bright white
