i'm going a mono-tub setup, 13pounds of hpoo and 6 pints Texas spawn colonized fully in 10 days. i like to let them sit for 7-10 days at this point, in my experience a little extra time at this stage (and the point after the wbs is fully colonized) means faster fruit growth and greatly more potent fruits.
anyway, so i put a casing layer of verm/coir on this weekend, and i figured since it was still being kept in my nice warm dark closet i could go ahead and drill the holes for polyfill at the same time since it wouldn't be getting enough airflow to really trigger pinning yet anyway.
however i looked last night and saw this:

looks like i've got a few early birds. and closer inspection shows there's primordia everywhere...lately i haven't used casing layers at all, i gave up on getting truely good pinsets a while back, and with carefully controlled pinning triggers i get decent pinsets anyway.
so last night i'd had a bit to drink (and a bunch to smoke) and i cold shocked it anyway, ~65 degrees for 12 hours, and brought it back inside (~70) around noon today, at which time i switched the normal lid for the fruiting lid.

so yeah. i guess i'll post more pics as things unfold, should be interesting. now i know to hold off on the polyfill till the casing layer is colonized. kind of a noob mistake i know, but i haven't grown in a good 6-7 months, so eh.

He remains this way for about three hours, making bizarre noises, pretending to be a new species that must learn to walk and talk and eat, etc. And he communicates with other life forms by way of the antennae on his head. Eventually we jam a tube from a waterbong into it's mouth and figure he's learned all he needs to know.

Cold shocking to promote pinning is a fallacy. Those pins you got should show you this. Also, cubes do not need a caseing layer, but it helps with moisture retention.

how so? a few random mushrooms does not = a pinset. also, i use the term cold shock rather loosely. it's more important to move it from the 80* colonizing temps to the 70* fruiting temps.
good to see somebody else doesn't care much for casing...

I'd say you should be ok, you might not get an obscene flush, but those little guys look like they'll grow up big and strong
I personally like casings, however cold shocking and dunking have yet to work for me... in fact I've had dunking kill cakes before (or at least greatly delay growth beyond that of non-dunked cakes).

i'm wondering if the silicone i used to seal the fruiting lid is still releasing some gas as it hardens and the shrooms dont like it? for some reason the majority of the pins forming now are on the outer edges of the tub, or an inch under the surface on the sides...
maybe they're just slow starters. when i grew orissa india it had kind of a pathetic first flush, then it got crazy after that. pics coming soon...

aaaaaand pics. i didn't get any real close up, my macro is kinda fucked up....so i'm not sure how many pins you'll be able to see.
