hey everyone, im new to the shroomery and i've been reading all that i can over the last 2 weeks prepping until my spores arrive. i'm really enjoying these forums and this is an excellent knowledge source, awesome community here. i'll fill you in on what i've been up to because i have a few questions.
i'm using the BRF PFTek with half pint Ball jars, 4 holes punch along the lid, all 4 holes have been taped up for the pc. prior to the cooking i was doing some reading and found some people leave their lids slightly loose.. (1) can anyone explain the function of this? i thought it might be to prevent a vacuum in the jars or to keep the jars from exploding.. i didn't quite understand but i figured it wouldnt hurt to try.
so i tried my first batch of jars with all 4 holes taped up, jars slightly loose, foil over the lids. they came out of the pc ruined by too much moisture from the steam.
my second try yesterday was the same way but this time with the jars tight. the result looks better but it still looks like moisture might have gotten into the jars. (2) is there any explanation for this? the jars we're completely tight and don't look quite the same as before i pc'd them, maybe more moist.
(3) is it even possible to sterilize the jars using my method? i see many of you using all kinds of foil/tyvek/polyfill etc and it gets discouraging when i'm having problems like this so early on.
can anyone see any beginners errors i may have made? i just want to perfect my technique

You keep the lids loose to prevent the vacuum effect when you take the tape off. That way you are not introducing a ton of fresh, non steralized air to your substrate.
As to the reason your substrate got wet. How high was the water level?
As for the method you are using. You said you were PC'ing, so, yes that is the widely used method, and preferred method here. PC'ing will kill everything.
The tyvek/polyfill is mainly used for grains. Reason being, when using the PF Tek your true contam barrier is the dry verm you place ontop of your substrate. With grains, the only thing imbetween the grain and open air is the tyvek/polyfill.
As for foil, that is used to prevent water from dropping ontop the jar while PC'ing. Same goal as the tape. You used both, no idea why you got water in there.
