spawning dung

i have some birdseed almost colonized which i want to use to spawn some dung/straw mixture i have. this is my first attempt with birdseed and my second with dung (if you want to call the first time an attempt) i have a couple of questions.

1. is it overkill to pasturize then sterilize the dung?
what i would like to do is pasturize my dung then load it into quart jars (my birdseed jars are 1/2 pts) with micron filter and lid band only (how my birdseed is colonizing) after the dung is sterilized in the pc and cooled off i will quickly add some of the birdseed spawn to each jar and shake it up, then put back in my incubator.

is this plausable? or am i heading in the wrong direction?

will i kill all the nutrients in my dung by paturizing and sterilizing?

once the dung is colonized i will case in kitty litter pans with 50/50 casing layer.

Hey,
Well I am trying to figure out the same thing. I was wondering if I could do that with the straw and manure...Could you give me some specs on to how you made that?

Secondly, I hear that its good just to pasturize, yet on mushmush.nl site, they said to sterlize completely.

I think if your going to spawn then put into jars, you should sterilze, however, i am really not the person to be responding to this... maybe Anno or someone with some good experience could respond! :smile:

Rastafari... I am not . I am one at heart. I dont say this just becuase I smoke pot. I dont even smoke pot anymore ... heh.

I would just pasturize if you don't have a filter patch bag or something. Thats what Una uses when he sterilizes. I've never tried the quart jars for sterilizing dung but I guess that would work fine you just dont get very much substrate. Those kitty litter pans are great though.

Hey Xazia......... I just dampen the dung and place in a casserole dish with the lid on and microwave for 10-12 minutes on the highest setting. Check the wetness of the dung after it cools .... the microwave may dry it a little. Let cool completely and then crumble cakes into marble size pieces and mix with dung. I use equal parts dung to spawn seems to work great. Place in your tins with saran with a few holes for the casing to breathe. Also cover with tinfoil with a few holes to keep out light. Check in 12 -24 hours the mycelia wil literally RACE through it. Then case with straight verm or 50/50 verm peat. I`ve done 30 casings just nuking my horse poop lol...... and have`nt had one fall to contams yet. The mycelia colonizes so FAST that it`s quite amazing . Good luck :cool:
