anyone ever read any william gibson?
in most of his books (scifi set in the near future) cash is illegal.
wonder if that would ever happen, and if it did, would it eliminate the black (free) market?

Why not? Why wouldn't government monitor your your what you buy to see if you are doing something illegal, like growing pot or mushrooms or synthesizing meth in your cellar?

If cash became illegal we would start paying for our drugs and guns with gold, i think. a quick trip to the jewelry 24/7 to buy your standard-priced jewels wouldn't take that long

Because A)use of the fingerprint is voluntary. and B) Its is a private company who will have your information, not the govt. and C) The govt can already track what you buy using credit cards or checks, so nothing has really changed since credit cards and checks are used all the time.

B. Thats whats wrong.. Its illigal for the government to gather certain information on people. Its also illigal for the government to use information against you.
Private companies have no rules or obligations against shareing your information. And they do. Mostly for marketing reasons but just imagine who wants your information and the path were on.
Im not too worried about the government spying on me. I dont think they are compitent enough to develope a system and get it to work so that they could. Im more worried about what BIG business could do with personal information. We could have a "personal" score on us. Much like a credit score, your personal score tells employeers, insurrers, creditors, business people and anyone else who wants to know things like your shopping habbits and travle paterns.
One recent example is how Auto Insurance companies have been using public and private records to raise rates for people living in urban areas. BIG lawsuit because they found that people living say in Downtown L.A. pay an average 40% more than say people living in Beverly Hills.

But you can still pay with cash, or not visit the store at all. How is a fingerprint going to enable the "BIG business" to do any more harm to you than a credit card? Both are just linked to your private information, and each could be tracked to know shopping habits. Am I missing the big point? Clue me in.

Because credit card companies have anti disclosure laws. Plus banks that are fedarally insured have anti disclosure laws. It all started with Club Cards.

So we can look up this woman's ass, but don't ask for her fingerprints.
