Yawning is the body's natural attempt to get more oxygen to the brain. You yawn in order to help keep yourself awake, normally, as more oxygen to the brain means more alertness. Most people breathe pretty shallowly, meaning that they use only like 40% of their lung's capacity while they're not thinking about it or concentrating on other things. Have you ever smoked some pot, taken good deep hits, and then like 10 minutes afterwards noticed smoke exitting your mouth if you exhaled really deeply, or talked through a long sentence? All the time we have oxygen and carbon dioxide mixing around in the very bottom of our lugs, near the diaphragm, where we don't normally breathe that deeply. When tripping, or even stoned, it's a good idea to breathe as deeply as you can. Inhale FROM the diaphragm (the belly). If you don't know how to do this try lying on your back and breathing deeply. You can watch and feel your belly (not your chest) rising and filling while in this position. It feels really good and is fun to do while shrooming. Breathe deeply from the diaphragm, and then exhale not halfway, but completely. This way you get an entire lungful of fresh oxygen the next time you inhale. Do this, and you may sound as though you're asleep while breathing, but you won't need to yawn. And all that extra oxygen to the brain helps ALOT, especially for meditation. Breathe like that for two minutes and watch your closed-eye visuals become super, super intense... its amazing...

Maybe not, in the long run, but no explanation, no mix of words or music or memories can touch that sense of knowing that you were there and alive in that corner of time and the world. Whatever it meant." Hunter S. Thompson.

We actually don't know why people yawn. The oxygen theory is just a hypothesis and some research suggest that it is not correct. It still is a mystery.
The fact that we don't even know why we yawn in normal situations makes it impossible to tell why we yawn while tripping. It would make a nice research.

You took the words right out og my mouth. Another question is why is yawning so contagious(sp)? When I take ecstacy I can usually tell that it coming on when I start yawning, stetching and getting that floaty feeling inside me.

lol my wife cleverly faked yawning, which caused me to yawn, then she threw a bunch of dirt in my mouth. i couldnt hit her because it was so devious and clever.
then i hit her good! in the good way though... yeah baby!
but also yes, i yawn like crazy whilst tripping. its a minor annoyance.

You yawn because mushrooms cut off oxygen to the brain and kills it its why you start tripping - lack of oxygen, so you start yawning to try and get oxygen back to it!!!
actually no - thats not true, I just had someone tell me that before and I couldnt help but laugh.
some of the urban legends of mushrooms people spread are appauling.

I don't know why I yawn but I use my yawns as signs that I'm coming up and signs that I'm coming down. These two are definitely related for me.

So, the question remains - why do we yawn? Dr. Provine suggests that perhaps yawning is like stretching. Yawning and stretching increase blood pressure and heart rate and also flex muscles and joints. Evidence that yawning and stretching may be related comes from the observation that if you try to stifle or prevent a yawn by clenching your jaws shut, the yawn is somewhat "unsatisfying." For some reason, the stretching of jaw and face muscles is necessary for a good yawn.
It is possible that yawns are contagious because at one time in evolutionary history, the yawn served to coordinate the social behavior of a group of animals. When one member of the group yawned to signal an event, all the other members of the group also yawned. Yawns may still be contagious these days because of a leftover response (a "vestigial" response) that is not used anymore. None of this has been proven true and yawns are still one of the mysteries of the mind.

This is a pretty old thread, although people constantly respond to it.
Yawning........, it happens when you are tired, and when all the processes that lead into a dream state are alined. Including fatigue. Yawning is common when using mushrooms.
A more interesting Idea Is why it is more common with psi mushrooms than it is with lsd. Now there is something to talk about.

Yawning for me, tends to be more common when I am feeling sleepy or intoxicated. Mushrooms have a stronger tendancy to make me feel drowsy - atleast for periods of the trip - and I think thats why I yawn more.
On LSD, if anything - I feel energized and alert, I dont feel sleepy or groggy, and yawn less.

I've noticed that when the comedown just begins, like, right when I get hold of the trip for good, yawning occurs regularly.

we yawn because it feels so damn good! :p

Mushrooms seem to make me yawn because it's the start of "holy...here we go!!!!!"..Thinking changes into a different pattern! I'm betting theres no scientific relation to shrooms and yawning though...yet. I've seen friends yawn while on shrooms also.

"TYLER: You know why they have oxygen masks on planes? JACK: No, supply oxygen? TYLER: Oxygen gets you high. In a catastrophic emergency, we're taking giant, panicked breaths... Suddenly, we become euphoric and docile. We accept our fate. Emergency water landing, 600 miles per hour. Blank faces -- calm as Hindu cows." FIGHT CLUB I really have no idea why we yawn, but I've found myself yawning a lot when I trip. Sometimes, my eyes tear up and leak tears as well... Maybe yawning is a subconcious effort to get more oxygen to get more fucked up. I know the air we breath isn't pure oxygen or even close to it, but our body may not know that. Could our body be trying to calm us down/get us high by inhaling large amounts of oxygen? Is tripping such a natural thing for the body to do that it tries to intesify the effects without you knowing (subconcious)? I dunno... but it's something to think about.

Last time I tripped I must have yawned at least 50 times. I couldn`t stop no matter how hard I tried. The people I were with thought that they were boring me, I must say when I went home for the night I passed out in 30 seconds

The article on yawning at wikipedia suggests that serotonin is one of the neurotransmitters connected with yawns. Psilocybin acts on serotonin receptors, so perhaps mushrooms simply stimulate the part of the brain which intitiates yawns. A simple side effect of the chemical, with no other underlying meaning.
