Well, from someone who went to this and went to the carl cox tent, he said...
Quote:
Next up, Carl Cox in the Carl Cox tent. Absolutely massive tent with a great light show. The music was not really techno, not really house, but just straight up party tracks. Cox really knows how to work the crowd.

Carl Cox was great. He however was not the best show. The techno tent was only 2nd best. The house tent KILLED it!
Donald Glaude was so fun, Bad boy bill and benny benassi were out of this world.
the mescaline didnt work, but i did score some free weed in there.

What sound is benassi pushing these days? Is it still that Satisfaction-type sound or has he found a new trick up his sleeve? It was fun a few years ago when the song first came out, but got tired pretty quickly.
I'd be curious to see BBB again. Saw him once before about two years ago, and the local toronto DJs put him to shame, I recall thinking during his set "wow, the music just got better", to look up to the front of the club and see him leaving with his 'possee' and a local TO guy on behind the decks. But, I've been hearing good things about him the past year and curious to see what records are in his bag these days.
Did you get a chance to catch Hawtin by chance?

I'd *LOVE* to see Liebing - how was he?
I've been listening to a load of his Collabs sets (him+speedy j), and they knock my socks off. His Noise Control mixes are pretty sweet also.
Morillo was in Toronto not too long ago, but didnt get a chance to see him.

not to offend anyone but "straight up party tracks" sounds like something that would come from the mouth of the uneducated(in edm that is).
he prolly played alot of electro, hes been rockin that sound laetely and is really get the blood pumping at parties.
il see him at coachella(hopefully). im very exited about it.
benassi is not pushing the same "satisfaction" sound. hes been playing some deep and techy house tracks(but not deep house, or tech-house) with a hint of progressive to it, also some subliminal shit.
to be honest, i really dont know how to desvribe it properlly. he has his own sound, as always.

Nawh, the guy who said straight up party tracks knows what he's talking about. Mind you, he didnt mean it in like, a 'top-40' kind of way. It was his way of saying he jumped all over - house/techno/electro/etc - didnt stick to any one specific genre, and just played tracks that got the place going off the hook. He was saying it as a GOOD thing, and not a bad thing.
Curious to hear what Benassi is playing, friend of mine saw him awhile ago at Ball en Blanc in Montreal, and reviews said
"unlike this year?s Bal en Blanc?s wasted booking of the horendous Benny Benassi and his headache-inducing repetitive signature ?sound?, copied ad-nauseum"
So, if he's got new tricks up his seleve and playing something interesting, I'd like to hear it. At the time he started to push that sound - it was fresh and new and had me dancing my ass off, but it did get pretty tired after awhile. If he's broken out of that mold, that'd be great.
He's playing Toronto soon actually, and wouldnt mind checking it out.
And, not totatly related to Ultra, it sounds from the reviews of the Winter Music Conference in Miami, the big trend (in house atleast), is 'electro-prog-house' - not sure if I like this or not, guess I'll have to head out to a few house parties this summer and see.

*note: I mostly 'activly' follow alot of the minimal techno stuff right now. Like all sorts of EDM - but just dont take an active interest in seeing who's playing what, so not as 'up to date' on the house scene.
On the upside, when I go out to a club thats playing house and see house DJs - it all sounds 100% new to me, as I havnt listented to death while at home, and I like that

god, my ears arent good enough to know about all these different genres and sub-genres of dance music.
i really dont get it. i have been listening to commercial dance music (tiesto, tiga, timo maas, iio, dirty vegas...radio crap) for around 4 years now and have been listening to all sorts of dance music for around 2, but i cant really distinguish.
your's truly, NOOB

I will agree that the genre-hair splitting at times can get a bit silly
You may want to take a poke at Ishkurs Guide To Electronic Music - while I dont 100% agree with what he says, it is a pretty good/neat way to see how all the genres and sub-genres get broken down and how they relate.
The differences between the 'main' genres are pretty obvious. ie: House, Trance, Techno
But, once you start to break down the sub-genres within genres, and then even the subs within the subs - it gets increasingly silly and harder to distinguish.
For Trance, 99.9% of 'normal' trance I dont like. However, within Trance there is Psytrance - however, I think its unfair to lump Psy with normal trance, and then within psytrance you have loads of sub-genres ranging from full-on to morning to dark to to to to .. and within those, you get sub-genres also
Within House. You got your mainstream stuff, then tribal, circuit, deep, tech, prog, hardhouse, glitch, etc, etc, etc.... and even those have various spin-offs
Within techno, you have the wide array from hard banging stuff, to scranz, to minimal,
The big trend the last year or so has been an explosion of Electro, straight up electro was very trendy for a while - stuff like Tiga/etc (to mention the 'popular' one).
Now I guess since the pure-electro trend is fading out, you are starting to hear alot of electro influences in other genres (and has been going on for awhile now), and this isnt really that bad of a thing - electro now and then can be good, and to hear some electro-infused tracks is always fun.
Was funny, just reading reviews from WMC, and /every/ DJ seemed to be spinning 'electro-prog-house' according to the people writing them up.
Prog used to be the blue balls of EDM - all build, no payoff. But, the last while it's been getting pretty good and far more enjoyable (for me atleast) and not as boring.
Some newer minimal is starting to fall into the same trap as prog in being a bit too ploddy, but as with any genre, you need to filter the good from the bad, and whats good in minimal these days is damn good.
In the techno scene, Minimal is currently getting very 'trendy', and you are seeing alot of DJs starting to infuse their sets with more minimal tracks. For example, Adam Beyer has been putting a bit more minimal into his sets, and prob released one of the biggest minimal tracks last year with Walking Contradiction, and even Chris Leibing has been tossing minimal into his sets (ie: the start of his noise control mix), but still ending off on a much harder-banging sound.
wow, spontanious music geek-out. Note, above is just opinion and may or may not be fact or 100% accurate

I wish Toronto could get some huge things like that comming through here.
All we got is oh, our 'waterfront music festival' in which all outdoor music needs to stop at 11pm (lame), and very very small. But, I guess its just starting, *shrug*
Then there is Toronto Pride, and the beer gardens are fun, and the sunday stage party can get the odd big name spinning @ it (DJ Dan), and our locals Dekoze and Jelo always rock the shit out of it, but getting some big-name talent would be fun. There is the circuit parties, but those are all seas of shirtless men too drugged up to tie their own shoes doing the one-two shuffle to circuit beats. Used to be my thing, but not anymore.
There is DEMF - but thats across the border and a problem for me. But hey, there is always Mutek in Montreal that I'm gunna try and get out to, and also WEMF (never been, but eyeing it up this year), and Eclipse - mind you, thats a long haul for me ,and not sure if going to MTL twice in one summer is in the books.
Then there is Teknival, which is pretty cool in its DIY ways - but you wont see any big-name headliners there, free outdoor party held out in the boonies and its a 'bring your own sound system' type of thing, still very cool - but nothing like WMC/Ultra/etc.

well ultra has 2 more years with miami, then its outta here. it started off very small, then this year they had to move it to a bigger park cause last year they couldnt fit everyone in. this year they expected 50,000 people to be there, ended up being around 100,000 people. anyway, ultra signed a contract with miami for 10 years, the city even tried to pay the penalty for breaking the contract to the people that started ultra. the city hates ultra for obvious reasons... *cough* drugs *cough* so ultra aint coming back to miami. i have no idea where else it will go.

a little off topic but, I took LSD and say Pink Floyd at a laser show at the Franklin Institute. It was the most amazing time in my life. Not just the lasers zipping around but the music was so loud it was insane
