I'm taking acid tomorrow night and seeing 2001: A Space Odyssey at the Ziegfeld, NYC's #1 fanciest coolest nicest best sounding theater.

I downloaded an xvid dvd rip of 2010 last night, skipped through it then deleted it!

From the reviews I'd read on imdb it sounded pretty boring....

What did you think of it?

OMR is the most popular pubber.  Everybody starts threads about him or asks for him.

I thought 2010 was really sincerely fascinating.

I'm with OMR on this one: it's a pretty fascinating movie. Has an interesting idea about Life in it.

I can easily see how non-SciFi-fans would find it boring, though.

I'll have to re-download it then and check it out.

Anyone seen that new Japanese horror flick called Kairo (AKA Pulse / The Circuit)???

Supposed to be utterly terrifying!

2010- The movie was second rate, but the book was good. Not quite as good as 2001, but better than most Sci-Fi novels

I've read a lot of Arthur C. Clarke, including every single book in the Rama series (that's quite a long read, I might add).

His sequels do tend to be harder to enjoy unless you're really into it. And it seems common for him to totally change gears or not follow a certain theme.

I think he's prone to going off on tangents when writing a new book in an exisiting series. Hell, in one of his sequels to Rama he added this really creepy sexual innuendo sequence. It made me think of him as a dirty old man for the rest of the day.

There's only 4 books in the Rama series

Unless you count the two written by just Gentry Lee. Arthur C. Clark had nothing to do with them.

Good series, though. One of the first scifi series I ever read, I think.

If you like good long scifi reads, you should definitely check out the Foundation series, by Isaac Asimov. 7 books.

Konnrade: I think that's the fault of Gentry Lee, the co-writer. It's pretty easy to see which chapters are Clarke's and which are Lee's if you look for it. The technical, inventive ones are Clarke's, and the ones full of stupid, unconvincing melodrama are Lee's. At least that's what I hope.

That's going to be sweet! I saw The Rocky Horror Picture Show at the Chelsea Theater, on Halloween, 3 years ago. We ate a 4 square of fractals about 4 hours before. It was a great and wacky time. Then, wandering around the streets, after for hours on end.  Union Square, The Park, at predawn hours, then ending up on the roof of the building I was living in, at the time. God, I miss New York!

I actually started reading the foundation series... but had to return the book before I was finished with it. I've procrastinated about actually buying the books ever since.

I've never gotten into sci-fi books, but fantasy novels I have read alot of. I did read quite a few Robert Heinlein novels. Stranger in a Strange Land and Time Enough For Love being the best, imo.

When I was younger, Isaac Asimov was my hero. My dad met him at a MENSA meeting and I was always jealous about that. But I never got around to reading anything but the first in the Foundation series!

I just started Asimovs, "The Foundation Trilogy". I borrowed it from a friend who said it was too meaty for him. It is a big beefy 500+ page novel with tiny print.

It may take me a while to get thru it.
