The chicken or the egg
    #542469 - 02/06/02 02:17 PM (14 years, 10 months ago)

Which came first?

Anyone who thinks the chicken is dumb, there is no good argument for it.

A chicken and an egg are lying in bed next to eachother...
The egg is smoking a cigar and has a big smile on its face...
Angry the chicken says: "I'm glad we finally answered THAT question!"

um there isn't really a good argument for either side... so anyone who thinks one side is dumb. well, not really.

i could swear i saw the same flippin' question here at least 2 years ago...
ummmmm, there were many kinds of eggs long before there were chickens (or any other kinda birdies...), so the eggies win by 250 million years... yay !!!

The egg came first. The chicken was a genetic mutation of another animal and was hatched from the egg

The metaphorical chicken and egg came about at the same time. Neither was first.

Let's back up a little here evolution-wise. Take bacteria (or any single-celled organism) for example. When it splits into two distinct cells (mitosis), which is the parent (chicken) and which is the child (egg)? The answer is: neither.

Now granted this is asexual reproduction, but all early forms of reproduction were.

From here on is pure conjecture as no one is sure how sexual reproduction came about. So for now let's disregard sex.

Now imagine that same organism further along the evolutionary time-frame undergoing mitosis, but instead of a roughly 50/50 split of protoplasm, it splits 60/40, 70/30... until it splits 95/5. We would call the larger part the "parent" and the lesser part, the "child". Because the smaller part will have less cellular material and have less chance of survival, perhaps it develops a strengthened cellular wall (an egg shell if you will) to better protect itself until it grows larger.

Use your imagination to carry this out several more evolutionary leaps until you have the present day chicken and egg.

The proof is in the pudding.

Your making me retract my statement. Did not think of the chicken inside the egg! But still it was the egg. My theory relates that sea life undergoing evolutionary change provided the first oxygen breathing organism.
I have some other options for conjecture.
1. A half oxygen/half water fish provides the first egg.
Meaning like turtles or such this fish was able to breath oxygen and craved it jumping out of the water to get high, therefore doing this for millions of years, led to advanced dual breathing systems. An egg washed ashore, got struck by lightening or was caught in early radioactive waste, and therefore created the mutant oxygen/water breathing walkiing fish.
2. A shell organism such as a snail spend millions of years eating algae off the rocks and breathed started to breathe oxygen and water. One day a group of eggs got struck by lightening and mutated so that the dna produced snails that craved the bacteria on the earth it lived on, thus creating the oxygen breathing earth bacteria eating snail, that evolved out of it's shell due to no predators, evolved to a snake, then lizard, then split, with two different mammals taking course, birds and monkeys. And there you have it, the two most intelligent life forms, birds and humans, lizards are still intelligent but have communication barriors.

I just though my 2 theory is a lot better and contradicts all the walking fish bullshit that they teach in school. And lightening does have to have a part. Because pure energy is god, thus god creating us. I am no scientoligist.

The whole point of pondering this question is that it does not have an answer. Think about it really long and hard.

By the way - fish breath oxygen .

Ok now that I have destroyed the base of that argument - I shall say that it is most likely that the [chicken]egg was formed slowly over a long time(by natural selection, gene recombination and mutation etc - ie. evolution) and only slowly came into existence as a variance of a sac surrounding the baby - at the same time it is probable that the chicken evolved aswell and thus I decalare the question nonsensicle .
