Stuck on Stupid redux

One of my favorite blogs (I check it several times a day) is Ace of Spades. I enjoy the guy's sense of humor and he covers a lot of different topics. Reading it today I came across the following tidbit --

Quote:

Hey, Morons, It's a Fucking Desert
? Ace

Very funny recap of a General trying not to lose his fucking mind briefing reporters about Operation Swarmer -- http://www.mudvillegazette.com/archives/004302.html

The general keeps patiently explaining -- while trying to avoid embarrassing the reporters -- that the operation took place in a ten by ten mile patch of virtually uninhabited desert.

But the reporters keep on asking him if there'll be reconstruction money following the grave collateral damage we did to... sand. And if we'll be able to revitalize the now-devastated economy there, what with their previously brisk trade in... sand. And what size force we'll leave behind to police and pacify the... sand, and make sure the... sand doesn't immediately again fall under the influence of Al Qaeda.

He keeps using the word "desert," but no one seems to grasp the concept.

You know the old question about whether people really listen in conversations or just wait for their turn to talk? I think we know the answer with respect to reporters.

It's definitely worth clicking on the link to the mudville gazette article he's referencing in order to get the full flavor of just how preoccupied with pushing the DNC talking points these supposedly unbiased "reporters" really are. Once you've read it through, you'll understand just how diplomatic the general really was. If it were me, after about the third stupid "question" I'd have let loose on them.

Some of the comments on Ace's site regarding this briefing are pretty right on as well. Here's one --

Quote:

"So General, how many women and children did you kill and maim?" What the Army needs is stand-up comics. People used to hecklers, you know. They need people to say things like ..."had you read the fucking press breifing, instead of try to score hash to smoke with your 11 year old house-boy....." Quit being nice to these slackers. I'm sick of the media calling all our soldiers "losers who couldn't find a McJob". Then they send these retards, who don't know what a McJob is, to cover a war? Give me a fucking break. Iraq is a step up for these bastards, so look at these pricks in that light. They may think they're rock stars, but they're fluffers for Mike Moore.

and another --

Quote:

They had their talking points when they came in, and were totally unprepared for something that didn't fit them. They didn't come to find out the news, they came to attack and cause trouble then write about what an ungrateful bastard the General was.

and another --

Quote:

Sad as it is to say, I'm going to say that many of these reporters are just "stuck on stupid." I work for a newspaper, in the newsroom, and I hear one side (a reporter's side) of many interviews. They truly believe their leftist agendas and, further, believe that those of us who don't agree with them are uneducated buffoons. They frequently make anti-Republican, anti-conservative, anti-religion comments -- and then they seem nothing less than stunned if anyone in the newsroom disagrees with them. Of course, the main reason they probably seem stunned is that most often no one in the newsroom does disagree with them!

p.s. --

As I said previously, Ace covers a wide range of topics, not all of them political. For example, on the front page right now is a bit on the top ten most annoying alarm clocks. http://ace.mu.nu/archives/164229.php There's another one about a guy who started throwing knives at cops, then when he had just about run out of knives, he cut off his penis and threw that at them too. http://ace.mu.nu/archives/163827.php So with content like that and political commentary to boot, you can see why Ace of Spades is a must-read blog.

There are undoubtedly some liberal reporters who skew things every chance they get to make America look bad and to make Iraq look like a quagmire. But, the Rightist optimists who insist that "Iraq is improving" and things are all fine and dandy are just as biased.

Iraq is improving. Not everything is fine and dandy. Neither implies the other. I personally think the progress is within reasonable expectations

Comrade, the evil and fascist capitalist pigs that run this country should be thrown to the wolves.  Once a communal utopia of enlightenment arises and the real nature of man is allowed to thrive, then and only then we shall live as we should.  This day is coming comrade!  This day is coming!

There has undoubtedly been progress in some areas. Freedom of speech and freedom of the press is much greater now than it was under Saddam. But, the amount of sectarian tension, day to day violence, instability, and fear is much worse now.

Now, I am definately not on the side of the knee-jerk liberals who hate America no matter what. The liberals love to see America fail and suffer. Could the U.S. stay in that country indefinately? Yes. Could the U.S. ever be militarily defeated by the insurgency? Of course not. But, it is undeniable that there are several anti-American groups operating in Iraq and that each one of these groups has sizeable amounts of combatants and sympathizers. These groups will continue to fight and kill American troops for as long as we are in that country. This means that there will continue to be violence and instability as long as we stay there. There will probably be even more violence and instability when we leave. Either way it doesn't look good.
