Yeah, it's kind of important to know how cloudy the solution was when you inoculated. Bacterial contams in LCs turn the solution cloudy. If you went from clear to cloudy, that indicates a problem. If you started cloudy, then no indication. Biologists use turbidity measurements to calculate bacterial growth in liquids. Order of magnitude determination can be discerned by eyeball, spectrography is used for accuracy and identification of wavelengths associated with specific bacteria.

If it looks that rough right out of the PC, you cooked too long and carmelized your solution. How long are you PC'ing?

since you used honey this is questionable, really the only way to tell at this point is make a couple of "control jars" they are just tester jars to see if LC is contamed, if they all contaminate at the inoculation points then you know theres a problem with the LC.

Honey? Oops. That is probably bacteria, then. If you are already carmelizing the honey, then you don't want to increase PC time. Try again, and pay real close attention to aseptic methods during inoculation.

30 mins is too long. Try 15 minutes next run. Personally, I wouldn't waste spores on a carmelized LC (tried that w/ no luck).

Sediment forms after you PC with honey, malt/dextrose and im not sure about corn syrup. The cloudyness is from the sediment I would think. Thats normal. You can boil the water first then add the honey to make some of the sediment form then you can filter the water with some coffee filters, that might clear it up a bit. Also caramelization occurs when it gets too hot in your PCer. The Mushroom cultivation book by Paul Stamets recommends not exceding a temp of 250F in the PCer or else the sugar caramelizes. At 15psi the temp in the PCer is 250 so as a precautionary tip you can PC at 12psi for say 20 min. Just dont exceede 250F and your good.

Light karo is glucose/fructose and makes an excellent LC, mainly because of its clarity. Don't worry about the vanilla flavoring in it, either, because some people use vanilla by itself for LCs. A 1% solution takes off the fastest, but grinds to a halt after a few days at the flaky stage, before forming into a ball, and is subject to bacterial infection. Greater than 5% solution is really slow to get started, protects against bacterial growth because of osmotic pressure of the sugar concentration, and keeps growing to very dense colonization of the culture. 3-4% is a good compromise for fast and full colonization. That's about a Tablespoon per pint of water. But don't get all uptight about measuring, it just isn't that critical.
