I have 4 5lb spawn bags in an 18 quart pressure Canner, and I wanted to know if 3 hours was sufficient enough to sterilize them. or is that not enough? or too much?

How tightly packed together are they? I'd do it a little longer, maybe 3.5-4 hours, just to be safe.

There are 2 layers, layed next to each other and then the second layer is layed the opposite way on top. pretty tightly packed, but there are air ways around them.

I PC'ed 3 of them the other day, for 5 hours, and it melted them, so I fear going too long.

I PCed them for 3.5 hours, and they melted on the side, I guess I either need to put a towel on the sides, or do 1-2 at a time...

your second idea is better, just dont let the bags touch the sides of the PC and you'll be ok.

Are those of you who get melted bags using gas or electric stoves? I suspect heat from the gas flame is wrapping around and heating up the sides. I never have that problem with my electric stove, even when I let the bags rest against the sides of the PC. RR
