Why didn't they say something?
The food was terrible. The music was too loud. I didn't get what I ordered. I need a refill.
If you voice your complaint and don't leave a tip, that's fine...but I'm doing my best to make you happy, and there is no tip, I'm left wondering where I fucked up and how to avoid that situation in the future when my rent is due.
j00 know?
You're still missing the point.
Tips are given for excellent or outstanding service.
Tips are not given for expected or adequate service, because that's what we pay for in the bill. It has nothing to do with whether you did something wrong or were inattentive or bothersome. It's about whether the service provided was exceptionally above average. Is that really so difficult for you to understand?
Let me put it another way: I only give tips when I feel that I have had a very good deal. I do not give tips when I know I can get the same deal anywhere and everywhere else.
It seems that most people have very irrational thought processes with regards to the ideas behind tipping, but that doesn't mean that those of us who understand it are rude, it just means that we understand the rational logic of the idea and choose to tip appropriately based on the rational idea.

And about the tipping thing: I hate that I feel obligated to leave a tip, even when the service is shitty. It's transformed into my leaving a $2 tip with a shitty waiter, and a $4+ tip with an excellent waiter.

I tip no less than 15 percent to every waiter/waitress unless they were shitty to me.

Most of mine have to do with driving. Im not saying Im the best driver in the world but from all the fuck ups that I see driving I am in the top 10%...
When I have the common courtesy to say "thank you" and the other person just walks away or some shit. Am I not worth a simple "your welcome"?
Simple things like -Holding the door open for anyone, it takes 5 extra seconds. -Turning down the radio/TV/ect ect when on the phone - Saying Yes ma'am and yes sir (Im 20 and say it to anyone that I don't know or an authority figure)
Maybe it is the southern gentleman in me?

In the UK that may be the case, but you bring that kind of attitude to a restaurant where I and/or most of the servers that I have known in my 10 years of service industry experience, and we will follow you to the parking lot to find out what the problem with our service was and if there wasn't a problem, then you will be told not to show your face in our restaurant, again. I work in private places and the management always backs us up, if we gave good service and the customers still don't tip. It boils down you being a cheap fuck and looking for the cheapest way out on any situation. If you don't want to tip, fuck off to Burger King. Not to our restaurants where we are pulling 2.13 per hour.

Dude, you live in Cali. Don't be ridiculous. I think everyone should be made to work in the service industry just to let them see what kind of things that we put up with. Bottom line is, the general public sucks. Dealing with their petty needs is tolerable if they tip. I am not working just to work. I work for exactly the same thing that you work for: money. I am a damn good server and bartender. I am very confident in that. Is it so hard to tip what you are supposed to tip, if you receive good service? 15 percent. That's all we ask. That's all. We don't want your kindness, or your smiles. These things are nice, but they don't pay my bills. Sorry if that seems harsh, but it's the way I feel.
