1st cake lots of Q's
    #5421783 - 03/20/06 09:46 AM (17 years, 10 months ago)

I have more of a question, not trying to start a topic discussion. My friend has recently started a project and has successfully colonized two cakes, one cake has this bluish hew to the mycelium just around the top, what could this be a sign of, his cakes have been in the fruiting chamber for 2 weeks, he is using perlite to humidify and the humidity is only around 75-80 he cant seem to get the humidity any higher, he has an air pump with getto-riged filter box, but he is not using it. He has so many questions even thow he had been reading about this for 3 years, i guess nothing can prepare you for the real thing. Pls reply, my friend is getting vary worried he hasnt seen any pins yet unless all these stelagtite thing are pins starting.

Blue = Bruising. The cake is either dryed up, low humidity, and general touching.

Get that humidity up.

(the cake waas never touched in the part that is turning color! I am ripping my hair out with frustration!  Do u think the cake will stilll survive and fruit??!  What made it change color so rapidly (one day)?  I put the air pump underneath the perlite layer directly below the one cake thats in there!  idk i think it is done for but thats why i come to u.the temp is only 74-75!  pls i need some advice!

If the fuzz is retracting, it is probably losing mass due to water loss. If you are using perlite and the humidity is not going above 80% you must be either doing something wrong, or using a humidity gauge that wasn't designed to moniter humidity higher than that. To use perlite you just wet and drain it, put it about an inch or two thick in the bottom of a rubbermaid container, put the lid on and let it work. If there is standing water in your perlite, get rid of it. It is tough to guess about how your cakes are, but it probably wouldnt hurt to dunk them for a night, and then put them in to a simple well humidified perlite container. As long as they haven't contaminated or fruited, they've probably still got enough life in them to produce a modest flush or two.

That made me feel a little bit better but i'm still worried, it hasent pinned i dont think, and its been in the fc for 2 weeks now with only fuzzy growth and little bumps and stelagtite things, this is my first fruit soo i dont kwite know what to expect. Are they just more fuzz or the begining of a shroom?

I appreaceate your posting it means alot.

By the way primus is GOD! (less is the master slap)

The little bumps might be knots, which will turn into pins. The stelagtite things just sound like more mycelium. It will reach out from the cake looking for somewhere else to grow. Try to be patient. You get kind of worked up waiting for the pins, alot of people have been there, but two weeks isnt unheard of at all. If you keep the humidity up, and it doesnt pin in another ten days, then you can start saying youre fucked. In the meantime just get the humidity up... Dunking like I said probably wouldn't hurt if it is getting so dry it's turning blue, but you'll have to decide for yourself about whether or not you should dunk it. If it is noticebly lighter (weight wise), it should probably be dunked.

What happened to your other cakes?

My other cakes didnt colonize compleatly within the time limit i had so i scraped off the excess substrate in my glove box, and put them in the fruting chamber until they were 100% colonized, then i cold shocked them and got come pretty nice shrooms in about 12 days. I was writing u befor the matenence and it got shut down, since then i put the cake directly on the perlite and the blue tint has decreases substantualy.
