casing concern
    #542042 - 02/06/02 01:35 AM (22 years, 2 months ago)

hey i cased some cambos on sunday, im not expecting any growth yet, but my question is this, yesterday, if youre still awake, meaning monday, when i checked on the casings, the sarar wrap had some moisture build up on it, tonight, i looked again and there is no more moisture buildup on the saran wrap, but upon close inspection in between the pan and where the substrate seperates, i see a nice build up of moisture in the cracks, should i have to mist those casings? they are sitting on the top shelf of my closet which i have doubling as a incubator, i have a space heater in there sitting on a pan which has been comfortable keeping that closet at an 78 degrees. i ran my thermometer chord up top to see what the temp up top the closet was at, its reading 82-83 degrees. are my casings drying out? do i need to lightly mist or should they be fine for another 4 days before i place them in my 72 degree terranium?

Don't let em dry out. The casing material needs to stay damp. But NOT TOO WET. I just spray mine LIGHTLY once a day while theyre incubating. This keeps em moist. Dont forget youre casings should not be completely covered at this point. There should be holes poked in your wrap for air exchange. I have solid lids for my trays that I keep slighly ajar. The new FAQ is very informative on this subject...

yeah i have holes poked through the wrap, so i should mist lightly about once a day? say every 24hrs very lightly? i know i dont want the casing layer to be soaked, but is it possible that they could possible be going dry? or playing that moisture is here but not showing game?

Yes...water will evaporate from your casings...if they look dry then spray them a bit but do NOT overspray. There should be no buildup of water anywhere. Basically in a nutshell-they should look "moist". Once a day I lift the lid up and spray once or twice. I use an old windex bottle as my sprayer. I hold the sprayer at about 12 inches away when I spray so the droplets that hit the casing are tiny. Be gentle with it. Too much water will hurt mycelium and developing pinheads. Piece of cake...bassplayer74

The casing material should have the proper moisture before applaying to the substrate. Then you sholdn?t need to mist it unstill you uncover it and put it back into terrarium.

Perhaps the lid of oyu casing container is already leaving some gas exchange, so that the aditional holes are too much?

well, i had only poked 4 holes a piece through the saran wrap originally, i just got through spraying lightly, and added a coupla more holes, i guess since i have two conflicting answers here, this will be the last time i spray or disturb these casings until sunday. upon closer inspection with the saran off, it looked moist still, but i feel better about giving it that light misting and adding 2 more holes. ill leave it be and see what happens, if i mess this up, i still have 20 other cakes to play with. thanx guys.
