Today's find in the park
    #5420704 - 03/19/06 10:42 PM (17 years, 10 months ago)

I found these four puppies while walking in a park today (I live in ACT Australia). I'm fairly sure they're edible but just wanted to check anyway, and maybe find out specifically what species they are.

Habitat- City park, thin patches of grass, near an oak tree
Cap- dry, white, 3-5cm in diameter
Stem- white, woody, strong, 1.5-4.5cm in height and 0.5-1.5cm in diameter
Gills- chocolate brown, free, tightly packed
Spore print- coffee brown
They smell very pleasant, like mushroom soup.

Those are of the genus Agaricus, but it's hard to say which species. There are some poisonous species in the genus.

As shroomydan said, those are Agaricus.

Cut one in half vertically and scrape the inside with your knife edge hard enough to bruise the tissue. What color(s) does it turn? It can take up to a hour for color changes to occur.

Happy mushrooming!
