Fresh picked Nicotiana Rustica leaves
    #5417717 - 03/19/06 12:07 AM (17 years, 10 months ago)

Sunup till sundown in my garden today... plus I went till 1am with my spotlight and a bonfire to keep me warm. I got all my rows made. and 30 bags of all organic soil was added to my space.

I harvested about 15 leaves off of my 20 or so rustica plants that are two inches wide, four inches long, about.. I've heard that maybe I should press them... That or let them dry out normally? I want to cure it for a month or two after it dries, for smoking.. what is my best way? Just in a mason glass jar, airing it out ever day, or what?
Will immature rustica plants still produce nicotine in the leaves? I imagine it will just be a smoother smoke,

imature leaves are harsher, When the plants leaves start yellowing at the END of the season thats a good time to harvest.

I hang to dry. I mist them down every couple days so that the slow curing process continues.

I wonder what it is like to just smoke the leaves....Like, if you found one of the wild tobbacco plants (where I live there are a bunch of short ones) and pulled off a leaf and smoked it in a pipe. Seems disgusting  if you can get it to stay lit.

Thanks so much for the links!!
:sun:

Actually I had already read that second link you gave me.

This answers my questions though... I guess these leaves picked green will mean they will dry with lots of chlorophyll and still have a lot of sugar and nicotine in them..
Oh well, it's just a test mode till the mature plants start to yellow

Do the leaves make good blunt wrappers?

One of the reasons TO respect it:

Rustica is the mother of all tobacco. I.E. a rustica plant contains enough nicotine to KILL you.

It's possible to overdose on nicotine just by harvesting the plants with bare hands.

Nicotine is a neurotoxin, which is why it makes a very effective pesticide. Rustica has nicotine up the wazoo.

Woah....are you fucking serious? How many plants would you need to harvest barehanded? And well do they do in clay-rich soil???(I see a bunch of wild-tobacco plants in the canyons near my house)

If the seeds where buried properly sealed in a clay vessel within a clay stratus, then possibly thousands of years. The seeds i had gotton where from my anthropologist friend, who was on the dig where the seeds orginated on. They where passed onto the elder tribal people who where residents of the surounding reservation land. The carbon dating put a thousand some odd years on the artifacts. The thousands of seeds in the vessel had a very high germination rate. The blood line continues. The people a thousand years ago fulfilled they're duties. The heritage continues today now. Dispersed to a number of people. I know now that atleast 6 generationes have been grown by a few people, I assume more has been passed on to others then i will ever know.

I wish I knew an anthropologist... I once contemplated majoring in anthropology, but I realized that community colleges are not where you go to study anthropology

Archaelogy would have been rewarding as well, and that would have been a great excuse to wear my Indiana Jones hat and jacket

Awesome

If you're ever interested in getting the jacket, it's about $300 to get one custom-made by Wested Leather. They made the jackets used in the films. Still have all of the original patterns.

do NOT just dry and smoke rustica leaves. seriously, DONT. this can lead to nicotrine overdosage leading to DEATH. Curing the leaves first is important, this is very important. This is a highly toxic plant that should be utterly respected

ok i did not read the replies but this is important and worth mentioning twice

It's worth saying again. I now realize they need to yellow on the plant first, and then slowly cure.
I gummed just a tiny bit of a leaf and then spit it out, and kept spitting swalloing NO saliva, and yes I got a buzz, it almost made my gums tingle and slightly sting for a millisecond.. the light buzz lasted 10 minutes.

DON'T EAT RUSTICA. DO NOT GUM LEAVES LIKE I DID.
RUSTICA IS DEADLY. RESPECT

ps- thanks for the tidbits... 1000 year rustica... cool stuff bro.
