I like the whole "This thread has gone cold" aspect of the icicle. Plus it directly contrasts the flames we already have for hot threads.
Fuck the gravestones and rocking chairs.

Other questions arise to mind:
How old should a thread be before it gets an icicle? Should it go by the age of the most recent post or age of the initial post?
I think something like 3-6 months is probably reasonable, and it should go by the date of the most recent post.

I'm going to wait 3 years, and bump the shit out of this thread. (So please don't lock it)

of course its supposed to be the first post! otherwise every bumped thread will loose this icon hence loosing it's function!

Well, my reasoning is that certain threads, such as a gathering thread, might actually be 6-9 months old but still be relevant and current.
Thus basing the calculation on the most recent post will ensure that the thread is actually cold. Pehaps shorten the time frame and deem a thread cold after 60 days of inactivity or maybe 90 days.

that would still make it useless... but maybe threads bigger then 6 pages (which most of the older threads that actualy survive for that long are) will get another post icon... maybe like a thumbup or star...
the whole point of the idea is once an old thread is bumped you'll have a sort of tell to know it's an old thread (befor even opening it) it's obviuse you're looking at old threads when you're digging in the archives

The "related threads" feature features many old threads.
It is all too easy to click on a related thread, start reading it, smoke a bowl, forget that it came from "related threads" and post in it.
If this is implemented in some way, related threads should also include the icon.

hummm... you're right...
whatever though... doesn't look like it's going to be implemented anyway so i guess all this talking is for nothing!

Well they haven't said "no" yet...
(Just as a reminder to the admins, this is not your cue to say no, and saying "no' now would not really be all that clever.)
Perhaps they're watching the discussion with a keen interest from afar, allowing time for more golden input from the community before they make the wisest move possible.

What I could imagine: at a reply, check the date of last post, and if it is older than let's say 30 days, go to the preview screen and display a message in BIG, BOLD LETTERS that the thread is old and that the poster should only post in it if he has something truly relevant to add. How's that?

hummm... thats pretty sensible i guess if some one goes on a bumping rampage that might hinder him a little, having to go through another page befor posting!
i think that would work good but i'd still like to see my idea implemented (because once that thread DOES get bumped people would still be able to note that it IS old befor opening it! so they might wan't to check WHY it's been bumped but still take acount that the other replies are old)
