Last time I had a harvest, I made the damp-rid setup with some airtight bowls, damp-rid on the bottom and the iron mesh bowl to hold the shyts.
Who knows a creative, cheap way to make the damp-rid setup?? I didn't like my previous construction... Better yet, who knows the cheapest way to crisper, dry my shyts??? I don't have a food preserver. I think letting them air dry under a fan will only dry them, but not crisper, crackle dry????

Set your mushrooms out on a tray in front of a fan for 24 hours and then throw them into a box w/a desiccant. What I did was I took a small rubbermaid box about 1'5"x2'x1' and then constructed 3 screens out of 1/4" galvanized screen. just lay out a large rectangular piece and cut out four 2 inch squares at the corners. Now you have flaps that can be folded down and formed into a little rectangular tray.
Put one in the bottom with a towel on it and then add damp rid on top of it. Then make 2 more of those little trays and stack one in there and add your fruits and then stack another on top and put the rest of your fruits on it. Seal the top with saran wrap and place the lid back on and check it again in another day. Should be nice and dry.
If that explination doesn't work I'll break down and take some pictures for you.

Depends on the LOAD I put in it.
Usualy, 24 hours. sometimes longer, with a bigger load.

5 gallon bucket turned into drying chamber

Made trays out of chicken wire and screen

Filled bottom with silica gel

I drilled 4 holes and inserted 1" plastic bolts w/ nuts to secure them to the bucket. Additional wire trays can be stacked ontop of the bottom one and so on.

This idea isn't perfect, but it works.
