Woah, smoking it can kill you if it doesn't cure, handling it can kill you....holy shit. Tobacco is supposed to kill me over a long period of time, goddamnit, not all at once!

If the seeds where buried properly sealed in a clay vessel within a clay stratus, then possibly thousands of years. The seeds i had gotton where from my anthropologist friend, who was on the dig where the seeds orginated on.  They where passed onto the elder tribal people who where residents of the surounding reservation land.  The carbon dating put a thousand some odd years on the artifacts.  The thousands of seeds in the vessel had a very high germination rate.  The blood line continues.  The people a thousand years ago fulfilled they're duties.  The heritage continues today now.  Dispersed to a number of people.  I know now that atleast 6 generationes have been grown by a few people, I assume more has been passed on to others then i will ever know.

can you come back and talk more about this please? was this in arizona?

15 year old thread but I wish I knew the plant was "deadly" before picking a leaf and crumpling it up to sniff; didn't seem to have much of a smell at all.

Although I intended to dry and cure / ferment the leaves first, I'll let the person I'm growing it for know that it's deadly potent. I'm well aware of the ceremonial and highly potent nature of it but not that it was deadly. I figured telling him to take a small puff and sit for a while would be sufficient and that it would knock him on his ass. (He smokes a lot, hence the interest in the plant.)

I suppose this explains why nothing has eaten the leaves except for one poor something or another that destroyed half a leaf.

I've grown and used a couple types of N. rustica and a couple of other more wild type tobaccos. I like to eat fresh leaves occasionally and my girlfriend does too. Just like a leaf or two, smaller ones. I've smoked a little bit too. It's harsh unless you cure/ferment it right...which actually isn't that easy to do.

It's stronger than regular commercial tobacco, but not super deadly in moderation...IME anyways. Most of the stories you hear about people getting sick from just touching tobacco are from field workers harvesting it all day, probably without gloves in most cases.

The only time that was too much for me was when I smoked some of the flower/seed bracts mixed in with a cigarette I rolled. Those parts of the plant grow a layer of sticky trichomes, so I figured I would see what that was about. I started to sweat and feel hot and tingly. I laid down and felt like I had the spins in two different directions with a little nausea. That lasted about 10-15min then it started to wear off. It wasn't awesome, but not entirely terrible either.

Rustica/wild type tobaccos also have higher concentrations of beta carbolines like harman and norharman that have their own effects and are MAO inhibitors.

I do have a tolerance to nicotine, and I'm not trying to say it can't be deadly at high doses. Respect these plants, but don't be scared of them. The difference between medicine and poison is the dose.

probably more than we should. do you think it was rustica that montezuma or his nephew would smoke from a gold pipe and pass out after eating as described by bernal diaz del castillo in his book the discovery and conquest of mexico?

I may have taken some puffs from a pine and a menthol but those were forced on me and I never took to tobacco products. I'm growing N.Rustica mainly for barter and as gifts.

you are smart and lucky you have the opportunity to use it sacramentally and get the full experience. the flower petals are  enticing they smell so good dried slowly in the hot sun. the first time i tried tobako i was a little kid and i liked it. when i started smoking there was a spiritual aspect to it, smoking at special places in the woods or with friends usually in a pipe but eventually started using it to escape awkward situations or not feel awkward just standing there, and working in places where the only tobako was cigarettes and everyone smoked, and to hide weed smell. then out of boredom. sit on the porch and smoke all night sometimes its pretty terrible. once all that bs stops will try smoking rustica but i like the rush from external application even better than smoking and don't want to abuse it. hard to guess the dosage though. might make a small salve. im a little scared to give it to the people i want to because it would be embarrassing to bring them something sub-par compared to what theyre used to. supposed to smoke it like fish but they are too scared of fires around here right now so sun/heat curing spreading seeds and dried flowers around and enjoying the flower sap on my arm. mostly growing for seed this year and a small stash for gifts
