i would not suggest it at all man, sorry to say but any phycadelic has the ability to pull latent problems such as depression and anxiety to the surface. they also have the ability to make current problems worse. i wouldnt suggest using any phycadelic but if you wanna do anything try pot, start small and build your way up. i wouldnt even do pot but if your desperate and think you can handle it, go for it!

"could that make shrooms more potentially damaging"?

No, it will make them more natural and they will fuck with you alot less. I was actually going to say that you should stay away from all that crap before trying mushrooms, but then I read your full post. If you have these "problems", then you should take the shrooms without any drugs in your system. That way you will experience the psychedelic in a very pure way, and will have a better opportunity to understand your own problems.

Even people with anxiety have at times found mushrooms to be very hard to deal with but it heals them in the end to some degree. I mean, anxiety is a common occurance at the beginning of and psychedelic experience. People with different forms of depression should have an easier time with mushrooms than those who have real anxiety issues.

Manic depression = Bipolar disorder.
Are you sure you were diagnosed with both? =/

I was diagnosed with depression/bipolarity when I was extremely young. (10 years old)

Although my condition remained for a good time after that... and in fact I'm sure some would say still exists... I never opted to routinely medicate myself. (I tried SSRIs briefly but they just weren't for me)

So I can't really say much about drug interactions.

I can however tell you that some of my greatest success with understanding and coping with my depression has been inspired (assisted, if you prefer) by psychadelics.
Namely mushrooms and LSA.

On the other hand, I would also suggest problems like depression can make you more vulnerable to types of psychological damage psychadelics have been known to cause.

In the end, I would say your exact 'risk level' will be based on a combination of your:
security in your own mind
your outlook, intentions, and expectations for the drug
and your respect and responsibility with the drug.

If you want to talk about it anymore message me.

While I wouldn't steer you away from 'shrooms alltogether, I would caution against rushing into the experience. Know the shroom. Know your environment. I think you'd benefit most from a relatively small first-time dose. Maybe 1.5-2 grams. The mushroom can be immensely therapeutic, but it can also, in some case, open some psychological wounds.

So, this is a decision that you should be confident about. If you are gonna dose, you ARE gonna dose. No back and forth. No shaky decisions. Be decisive, but take time deciding. Do research. Erowid.com is a great place to start if you haven't been there already.

Be in a safe, comfortable, and prefferrably stimulating environment.

Most of all, have fun.

You should really do what you want but one of the reasons mushrooms bring stuff like that to the surface is to help you work though it. If any of you guys can get podcasts listen to psychedelic salon there is an interview with this guy who in the 60's used LSD and mushrooms to cure schizophrenic children and other crazy shit.

While bipolar people should be extremely careful with all drug use, psychedelics are MUCH, MUCH safer for them than stimulants or downers.

You should also be aware that it's not just psychedelics which bring these kinds of things to the surface, any drug can. The source of some of your problems could be the drugs you've taken before, if that were the case you might not get anything mind-altering from the mushrooms... Or they could just enhance the problem.

I suffer from those conditions and I take it easy on mushrooms. You just have to make sure you're with the right people, I find.

i am a schizzoaffective bipolar. include hallucinations paranoia delusions.. ironically LSD brought the first symptoms a couple years back.. but since then Ive done LSD more time then i can remember doing it has made me more stabilized. i go in to really introspective trips,.. and determine the causes for my issues and by that i can diminish them,.. now the risk is greater with people with mental issues. but ember your mind doesn't control you you control your mind

Depression and anxiety is very different from bipolar..... dep and anx are too much going on in the prefrontal cortex, bipolar is weak bloodflow in the prefrontal.
So while shrooms can help dep and anx it will probably increase the effect of bipolarity....

I have never been diagnosed bipolar but am pretty sure my mom is and so I am

I have been taking a break from tripping but I used to trip a lot with no issues aside from a few blackout doses, but that's unrelated.

Anyways my trips would often have a bipolar feel at times, for example during the come up I would usually go through a depressed phase where I think about all that is wrong in the world, and how much humans are fucking things up. But usually that wouldn't last long and the despair would turn into hope and happiness for all that is good in the world.

Honestly psychedelics taught me a lot about the duality of life, the yin and yang. You can't experience one without the other, they key is finding balance and not dwelling on either side.

Take that with a grain of salt as like I said I have never been diagnosed, and cannabis and kratom have really helped balance out my mood overall.

Personally I think the brain is too complex for things to be black or white, being manic or bipolar might make tripping really difficult for some while it might grant others a unique perspective/ experience.

In fact there is evidence things like Ayahuasca can actually balance out our brain chemistry, and many mental issues stem from chemical imbalances.

As long as you are cautious and start low and respect psychedelics it could be worth exploring, but in the end no one can really tell you if it would be "safe" or not.

There is some inherent danger in the psychedelic experience for anyone, but that's just part of life. If it was a perfectly safe consistent thing we wouldn't have as much to gain from the experiences.

Anyways I hope you find something to help. If I were you I would focus on living a healthy lifestyle, find some medicinal plants to help you feel more balanced. Then maybe consider tripping when you are at a better place and feel ready for it. Meditating is a great way to start and is something I think everyone should do for many reasons.

The dude you're replying to hasn't even logged in 3 years and there's plenty of bipolar people who have benefited immensely from psilocybin. Notice how most people on the psilocybin comedown tend to be very emotionally stable. Psilocybin jumbles everything around during the onset and peak before fixing them in the end. It does the same thing to logistic comprehensibility.

If you are in a manic state, DO NOT, I repeat DO NOT ingest mushroom or any other psychedelic. Maybe toke... that should calm you or make your mind run faster. One of the two. People who suffer from bipolar induced mania, are typically already spending excessively, making irrational decisions, not sleeping, not eating, and are extremely distractable. I'm assuming you've been diagnosed with Bipolar 1, hence the mania, and not type II. If you are manic, you will feel "too good" and invincible. Ingesting shrooms would not be a good idea in a manic state. Talk to your doc, get your mood leveled out, then I would suggest a microdose to start with to see how your body reacts to a small amount. Best of luck, and feel free to ask any questions. I've treated many pts with bipolar and mania in itself is very dangerous.

I know this post is old but my answer seems relevant in our ever changing understanding of mental health and ways to treat it. I am bipolar 1... manic like 80% of the year. I have tripped probably over 100 times and I'm in my thirties. Both LSD and mushrooms. Mania can make things overwhelming but as long as you are with people you trust completely to keep you safe then go for it. It's a risk for anyone. I tripped so many times in 2012 that after I stopped I thought mental illness was bullshit and that I had been lied to. Well life slapped me in the face in 2019 when my mania came back. Put plans in motion to kill myself twice (backed out on them) and attempted with a pistol a third time. A stranger (or angel) pushed it away and now I have a hole in my truck instead of my head. Anyway in MY OPINION as somebody who has had INTENSE problems with mania for over 24 years, there are no more risks than anyone else. A seemingly "normal" person who JUST went through a breakup may not want to if they aren't willing to risk a bad trip. But a seriously manic bipolar (me) with very trusting friends and a comfortable environment with intentions of using the experience to push through mental barriers and find focus... may have better luck. Ask yourself what you want from it, go into it with nothing other than that intention, and if you find benefit from it medicinally for your mental health, be mindful that it doesn't sneak up on you later like it did me. Anyway I hope this comment helps.

Hey there,
So I am bipolar (type 1) and I can tell you that this is going to be a question that ONLY YOU can answer. I will tell you that for me personally, I have never had psychedelics put me into psychosis, but they have put me into manic episodes. This is a possibility. I'd suggest you start low and go slow, HAVE A TRUSTED TRIP SITTER WHO WILL KNOW WHAT TO DO IF YOU GO INTO PSYCHOSIS, and PLEASE for the love of god take care of yourself mentally and physically afterward, be prepared for an episode, and intergrate your trips. Wait a couple weeks between tripping so you know how itll affect you.
Be careful, but not afraid. Your disease does not disqualify you from the right to enjoy psychedelics, and dont let anyone tell you different.

EDIT: FUCKING SHIT! Please STOP reviving 16 year old threads, I didnt notice til after I replied but this was LONG dead. Please do NOT revive long dead threads.
