It really amazes me how well this player is able to run. I can run practically any file format, proprietry codecs included, from the command line with all the options that I want.
It also runs fast. It is able to play DVDs without dma support with very little lag (dma isn't an option for me unfortunately). And it's free, open source and without spyware.
Almost too good to be true...

i can't seem to resize the video playback feild. i can make mplayer's window bigger, but it doesn't resize the video play. it just fills in the extra space with bluish background. i occasionally use it when i have a file that is not cooperating with xine.

You mean adjust the aspect ratio?
This would be for a movie with a bad aspect ratio that you want to fix, maybe?
I'm not sure how you would do that. You can change the size of the x window with the mouse, or hit 'f' for fullscreen, but it seems to keep the same ratio when you do this.
I've never seen any blueish area of the screen.
Are you running from bash?

Try a different video driver, (under Preferences/video tab if you're using a GUI interface) not all drivers support resizing.

I think it's pretty cool how nix has become the default OS in this forum. We all just assume that's what everybody's running unless someone states otherwise.

Dependency issues suck. Luckily it compiled ok on my system.
I just thought of this, but maybe the problem is the video driver.
Example, when I run mplayer, I use X11 driver (mplayer -vo X11) however it may be that yours is something different. I think that 'mplayer -vo --help' will list all the ones available.
Cuz I've never seen anything blue or had any resize issues at all.

I use the mplayer plugin for watching videos in firefox, but for the usual movies, I prefer gxine - no real reason.
