how to up the humidity
    #540700 - 02/04/02 09:11 PM (22 years, 1 month ago)

i have about 2.5 inches of perlite drenched in water at the bottom of my terrarium (its a big trunk ~40 gallons maybe?) and i can't seem to get the humidity higher than 90%... are there anyways i can boost this up to 95% or 100%? (i've already tried some misting). i don't feel like hooking up my ultrasonic because i feel like humidifiers are crap and let out too much moisture. any suggestions?

You dont want the perlite drenched you want it moist. Perlite should work in any sized container as long as you have a inch or so of it covering the bottom.

For almost all applications 90% humidity is fine. If you want it higher just make sure the terrarium is sealed better....perhaps put a fish tank heater in a mason jar filled with water at the bottom of the terr. This will help with the water evaporation and bring the humidity up. After fanning it may take the perlite some time to get the humidity back up to its prior state so its a good practice to mist a little after fanning.

What kind of humidity gauge are u using? If you have that much perlite in there, it's probably near 100% already. I suggest getting a digital hygrometer if you don't already have one. The other kind is almost always wrong, unless you get a mega expensive one. I just have a feeling that your gauge is not accurate at high ranges...bassplayer74

does more perlite and water = more humidity? because when i first put the perlite in my terrarium the other week it was at 90% humidity and now i have a lot more water and perlite in it (tryin to get it to 100% RH) and its only around 80%. i'm confused on how this is working...???

Yes...more perlite and water=higher humidity. I really think you need a new gauge. If you have that much wet perlite in your terrarium and it is relatively airtight then you probably have near 100%. Are the walls of your terrarium damp?

Hey MickeyFinn, I have that humidity/temp guage they sell at wallys, it works very well. Its an AcuRite, and it keeps track of highs and lows of both temp and humid. Plus it has this funky little light, indiglo or something. But it is pretty damn accurate as far as I am concerned. But yeah, go digital... for sure. Shizznit, its only 14 bucks.

The walls on my terrarium arent damp, and its got a cool mist running 24/7 in it. it also has a fish tank bubbler running 24/7 in it :P expeling co2, with a clean air intake at hte top, 99.97% filter.
