From what I read it's best not to use the microwave... it doesn't always kill everything. Better off putting in jars and pc'ing. And beware with peat moss, I think you have to worry about PH levels and add calcium carbonate.

umm, actually chef, you're wrong. you should pasteurize your casing layer. Sterilizing it invites mean green.

Not according to the "60/40 Vermiculite and Coco Coir Casing Tek" it tells you to sterilize it, plus someone in the comments says the same thing about pc'ing.

Plus the 50/50+ casing tek has this to say about it:
Quote:
Tips on sterilizing and pasteurizing substrate: There has been a lot of discussion on whether it's better to sterilize the casing soil or not. In my friend's studies, he has found that sterilizing is better. Some people like to pasteurize it. That's OK, but he prefers to sterilize it.
So guess you could do either??

you can do anything you want. There is an amount of microorganisms you want to be there. Search this topic, as it has been discussed at length previously, and look up a good discussion about it.

The way I see it; the casing layer is meant as both a protective layer and to help regulate humidity. I would rather like knowing there was nothing bad at all in it, than maybe be able to keep a few beneficial nutrients and risking contamination.
Now if you are talking about extra substrate material to spawn to... then yes I would just pasteurize that, I would not want to kill everything off in that.
But w/e....

Here straight from Shroomery's Cultivation FAQ:How should I prepare the casing layer? It lists both methods and this:
Quote:
Contrary to popular belief Psilocybe cubensis doesn't need microorganisms in the casing for the mycelium to pin, so sterilization can be used where contamination issues are a problem. After the casing material has cooled down to room temperature it can be applied to the substrate.
Thats provided she is doing Psilocybe cubensis... not sure what she is cultivating.
Hope that helps.
