Interesting rubbermaid tub....

I was at the store today and saw a green rubbermaid about 65 quart or something with a clear kind of domed lid (the lid is like 4 inches tall). Looked like it would be perfect for monotubs. The thing is that the lid is clear but the base was solid green. I kinda thought that might be a good thing since the light would only come from the top. What do you think? Is there any real big disadvantage to not having a clear tub if the lid is clear?

Get a normal, dark tub. Buy some silicon sealant and some clear plastic sheets (the kind that come folded with a margin-clip for the edge, so you can protect a paper or something are badass and durable as well as being proper material to stick WELL to the sealant and can be cut along the fold to make two sheets are badass). Cut a 7x10 window in the top and run the sealant around the outside and top of the hole. Place one of the clear sheets onto the sealant rectangle and over the hole ~ and you've got a good transparant window (not translucent) to give better direction to photosensitive mycelium and it was cheap as hell.

yup those are the ones... but not with cedar. Is cedar good or bad? The ones I saw were green. How much are they at Home Depot?

How do you sterilize cedar? I would think anything that is wood would trap bacteria.

no no no no, its not CEDAR....
Its plastic...but has...hell....a cedar smell...I am guessing small bits of cedar in the plastic?
It's feels JUST like a regular rubbermaid tub. Actually its a bit thicker...

Yep has cedar in it: "Rubbermaid announced today they've upgraded their Roughneck? resin storage totes to included embedded cedar wood, giving their popular line of plastic storage bins the smell of natural cedar, and protection against insects.
The folks at Rubbermaid actually took pieces of cedar wood and mixed it into the plastic resin during the molding process. The company claims the result is the same durability of the Roughneck? brand, with the smell and bug-repelling properties of cedar wood."
I wouldn't trust something with wood in it, I won't even use wooden cutting boards for cooking.
Edit: correction; unless cedar has some good properties... I know cigar smokers love their cedar humidors, so maybe it is ok.

i dont think humidors are made of cedar. They are made of some kind of red wood. And mine easily grows mold. Tokey: i went to 2 walmarts today looking for those. I saw them about a month ago but i think all the homedepots around me sold them all. im pissed

Funny how a search on google with "cedar humidor" returns a whole listing of cedar humidors. :S

But yeah, maybe its just red wood.
