It isnt nessacary to have a drip guard in my tub if I am just using the plain perlite method , I mean it seems like the obvious choice to use to , from what I read just a few inches of perlite and a half inch or so of water and you get more humidity than any other way or atleast as much and it is def. the simplest , im all about simple ways , why make it harder than it needs to be and why spend 40 dollars on a humidifier

IMO you dont need a drip gaurd.. and if you use perlite make sure you dont have any standing water in the perlite, it should all be soaked up by the perlite. are you doing cakes or casings??

so if I want no standing water than should I just add a little at a time untill it starts not to soak up so well , i mean that might still leave a tad of standing water and do I need to add a bit of water every few days or so or what

well ive only used perlite once.. then i whent to casings..so im not an expert.. but just put your perlite in a pan and add water till all the perlite is covered, then let it set for a min. then pour it into a strainer and shake it out real good then place it in the terrarium. when i said standing water i meant you dont want like 1" of water on the bottom of your terraium.. obivusly there will be some. you just dont want a big pool of water to bread contams in.. some ppl put a lil bleach or peroxide in there water for the perlite.. hope that helps some..
l8r, will

RogerRabbit said: You can put the perlite in a strainer and let water from the kitchen sink run through the perlite and drain out. Once it drains, dump that into your terrarium. A two inch layer should as said above, last through several flushes.
The humidity will be higher with no standing water. Perlite has a huge amount of surface area due to its structure, so all that surface area will be evaporating water. With standing water, you're limited in surface area to the significantly smaller surface of the water. RR
