Does anyone know a quick efficent way of chopping bails of straw? Also could anyone tell me the proper depth for a straw substrate for just one flush. I prefer one flush per casing cause it lowers the chance of spawning contams.

A lawnmower will work. A straw substrate should be no more than 6 inches deep. I think you may have your terms a bit confused. When you get shrooms that is called a flush. You then pick them and another "flush" will happen and so on. So you want as many "flushes" as you can get. BTW, spawn is what you use to transfer mycelium to a bulk substrate such as straw. Hope I've helped...bassplayer74

No my friend just feels that in order to get more yield he throws casings out after the first flush because the substrate layer has always shrank considerable. The flushs are as full as they could come its just that he decided to switch to straw. So to use not to much colonized straw(because of only going through one flush) he wants to know if a 1in layer would be sufficent. Also a lawnmower just doesnt seem to practical at the moment so if anyone would have any other suggestions it would be greatly appreciated.

Try some sort of stout scissors or snips then. I just break mine up by hand. The biggest shrooms usually come on the second and third flushes. Why would you want to give them up. Smaller substrate depths yield smaller results. Make your straw depth 4-6 inches. After the first flush fill in the space where the casing has shrunk with moist sterilized casing material and lighly patch the areas of the casing that have been disturbed by harvesting. This is the best way for you to go...bassplayer74

Seems to me on grain he found on the trays with humidity domes he would get 3oz dry first flush and about an oz dry on the second and down hill from there. This could be because the trays only allow for a 1 1/2 in substrate layer. Mind you this was with grain(rye & millet). Bassplayer I will keep you up dated on the 1 1/2 substrate cause his straw started pinning this morning. Because of the first flush yield he finds it more productive (with grain so far) to just discard the harvested tray and immediatly throwing in one that just started pinning resulting in a flush in the same amount of time that it would have taken for a second flush to come through but more yield. This is just his experience but he has huge trays 3ft x 5ft x 7in which would provide much more substrate about 5-6in. So he will try this and see if it has an effect on second flushes. Thanks for all the help.
