Well, the topic says it all. I have been using these 70 cent a bag oven bags for my pasteurization and its really starting to add up. Are there other bags that I can purchase locally (besides the ones perlite and verm come in). My local wal-mart doesn't have any of the individual sealer bags, just rolls (and I don't have a sealer.)
Any suggestions?

Holy monkey balls.....I honestly don't think I would go through 1000 of them....I bought 100 syringes and have only used 6! (Thanks to your liquid culture teks)
I didnt see any other options for me on that site though. And really wasn't wanting to spend 50 bucks on them, ya know?
Have any other suggestions? I dont mind mail order at all, so keep em coming.

go to walmart and look for those new big azz ziplock storage bags. i dont know if you could PC them but they should hold up to pasturiztion, ive used the ziplock quart size baggies for pasturiztion before and if they could take it then those big ones should beable to. im probly wrong but IMO any desent plastic bag can be used. the temps are only going up to 170, just make sure you put a plate or bowl under it so its not resting on the "hot" bottom of the pan. i figure if i can stick my bare hand into the water and not get burnt then the bag should be able to hold up.. or even try some of the industriual garbage bags from walmart..
--------------------
I am not lost.. i am going there looking for it.. and when i get there and find it, i will know what it is.. "The way to stop violence is not to go out and let your head be beaten in but to say, you want to take my life risk yours!" "are you sure u want to eat all them shrooms??" "yes i want to hear what my mind has to say..." remember opions are like assholes, everyone has one and they all stink.

Thanks wilmafingerdo, I thought of that. Unfortunately, the price per big zip lock bag is MORE than the oven bags, so either way I am screwed. And I do have industrial garbage bags, but those are HUGE, even if I do cut em down.

tokey, for about 50 bucks you can build a pasteurizer.
Take one of these:
then connect one of these to it
For about 40-50 bucks (depending on where you live) you can pickup one of these bad boys at either a Menard's or Home depot. I got mine for 50 bucks at Menard's.
the tube is threaded and if your spout at the base of your cooler is too, then just thread the tube from the steamer to the cooler.
I have a 70 gal large rubbermaid with a hole at the base, the steamer threaded into the tub nudged inbetween two bricks. then, on top of the bricks i have a large laundry basket sitting that JUST fits into the tub. This is where i place my straw/poo/compost (whater i want to pasteurize)
this allows me to pasteurize about 8 oven bags worth at a time. I just fill the reservoir of the steamer up, put my medium into the basket, close the lid and turn it on.
It is important to note, however; holes should be placed at the top of the lid to vent out a little steam. this allows for continual heat to be sent into the tub. Set it and forget it for an hour and a half.
well worth the time and money. lemme know what you think.

Thats an awesome idea! I don't pasteruize THAT much at a time though. If I ever step up, that's DEFINATELY where I am headed.
I am guessing that is just a normal steamer, eh? Does it go by a certain name?
And thanks tooth! I didnt even think of that one....

its a wagner power steamer. should be able to find it at any hardware store that sells wallpaper supplies. its really helped me out. probably one of the best investments i've made.
its quiet, virtually mess free, and requires no supervision. i dont have to make sure the temperature stays under 180, the steamer keeps it at exactly 170 the entire time.

sweeeeeeeeeeeet
let me ask you this.....
field capacity....does the steam cause excess hydration in the poo, causing you to ring it out again?

good question.
the steam itself doesnt really saturate whatever medium i use. just bring it to field capacity and pasteurize. its actually crucial to make sure your poo is nice and hydrated. that way the whole thing pasteurizes evenly since water is a conductor of heat.
i pasteurize a lot of straw this way as well, and i have to make sure and give it a hot water soak before i load it in. or else it will not be field capacity when its done.
if you need any other help, just pm me.

This has just gone into my book of cheats, question though when you are loading poo or straw, do you keep it in a seperate container or just toss it in and even it out?
