Bright Eyes - Why the long face?

What does Bright Eyes have to be so depressed about? In the mock interview (which is one of the most ridiculous things I have ever heard) on Fevers and Mirrors, he says that his mother drowned his five brothers. Is this true?
-------------------- "But for the sake of some little mouthful of flesh we deprive a soul of the sun and light, and of that proportion of life and time it had been born into the world to enjoy."

i don't think that's true. i think he was just fucking with the interviewer (the entire interview wasn't real to begin with).
Conor Oberst is just reflecting the depressive aspect of the universe. sometimes you don't need a specific reason.

not all of his music is like that; much is positive and uplifiting, but also don't forget that Tragedy is the hieght of artistic achievement.

its not true as a far as i know but it is a theme that he keeps comming back to.
padraic my prince - from letting off the happiness
I had a brother once He drowned in a bathtub Before he had ever learned how to talk And I don?t know what his name was But my mother does I heard her say it once
Padriac, my prince, I've all but died From the sheer weight of my shame You cried but no one came And the water filled your tiny lungs Appear, my dear, and cry for me It was six years ago today That we laid you in your grave Your sweet young skin was shining then too
And so tonight to celebrate, I will, I will poison myself Another coughing, shaking fit in a bathroom that is spinning
So I close the door and rest my head on the tile floor Sickness and sleep turning me cold I'm still not sure Is there some better place I should be heading towards? Where the selfishly sick and self absorbed are welcome
I saw the future once I was drunk in a phone booth My eyes were wet and red But I could not tell what was said And through the screams of the traffic Voiced carried, saying, "Im sorry"
On a day so gray it's black inside Watching churches on tv In a coma you don?t dream You just hope that someone sits with you Babies turn blue when they're ignored Like the sky on summer days Before you turn and walk away It has changed you
So tonight to compensate, I will, I will poison myself Another coughing, shaking fit in a bathroom that is spinning
-------------------- ---------------------------------------- we hope that you choke

no it is not true. conor oberst believes in separation of art and artist. just because he might tell you a story in a certain song (padric my prince, for instance) doesn't make it autobiographical. i can respect that.
i don't listen to music to know the person or learn anything about them, i listen to be entertained. if he can make me imagine such a depressing thing as my siblings drowning in bathtubs, and put it so poetically where it's actually interesting, then more power to him.
the whole interview was a joke and (i think) scripted.
i really enjoy bright eyes and have seen them two times. don't listen to them much anymore but i will always enjoy them.

Not true.
A friend of mine from college went to the same expensive Jesuit prep school as Conor Oberst. Want to see why he's full of self-hatred?

Anyway, being sad and opiated and self-hating is just part of being emo in omaha (emoha). Not exactly the happiest music scene in existence...

a lot of comparatively happy music comes out of omaha too, though. like the faint.
and i think conor is more into coke than opiates. but i wouldn't be suprised if he did both and a lot of other things as well. i know he drinks a lot.

and if that offends any of the mods, please delete/edit my post. you guys know i love this forum but when somebody has such blatent disreguard for the rules and general respect of other members opinions, i can't help it.

The Faint makes me want to do drugs and dance. That's happy to me.
-------------------- Acid doesn't give you truths; it builds machines that push the envelope of perception. Whatever revelations came to me then have dissolved like skywriting. All I really know is that those few years saddled me with a faith in the redemptive potential of the imagination which, however flat, stale and unprofitable the world seems to me now, I cannot for the life of me shake. -Erik Davis

well said. much better than "they fucking blow".
and as a bonus now you sound like maybe you did pass high school. SCORE.
adrug- i don't find anything sad/depressing about the faint. maybe some of their lyrics are SLIGHTLY sad but not all that much, and even then the dance feel of it cancels that out a little.
but that's just me. different music affects different people in different ways.
