Microphone problems with built computer
    #5413182 - 03/17/06 02:44 PM (17 years, 10 months ago)

I built this computer about a month ago and it's working fine. The only problem is that microphones do not work on it (unless I turn the settings all the way up in the sound properties and talk ver loud; in this case, all I hear is the very faint sound of my voice). I have an ASUS A8N5X motherboard with onboard sound. Speakers work fine, but the two microphones I tested have the same problem. Are there drivers for this or what?

Good idea to check for the latest drivers, Have you checked in your mixer
(start ->settings->control panel->Sounds and Audio devices)
Under Device Volume, click advanced, then when you are in your mixer click on options then advanced.

Then underneath your microphone settings there will be an new 'advanced' button.  Click that.

Within this menu there should be an option for a 20db boost, or just microphone boost.  That should do it for ya

When I put the boost on, I can't even hear myself talking loud on Sound Recorder. What kind of drivers am I looking for, just general mobo ones or special onboard sound ones for the mobo?

From my experience, there is usualy no seperate drivers for the microphone input aside from soundcard drivers, but your microphone itself may need it's own software.

Goto asus.com and get the latest sound card drivers for your MB, if that does not do it find out the manufacturer of the microphone and see if they offer some software. If that still does not do it, try the microphone on another PC. If it works there, then you know it is your MB that is causing problems, if it don't work their either then you may have a bad mic.

Try another mic on your system at the same time just to be sure.

PS, is the mic plugged into the Microphone input, not the Aux input? that would definily make a difference!
