The "apple" smell..
    #5411853 - 03/17/06 08:57 AM (17 years, 10 months ago)

Hello,

Afof has two jars, inoculated a week ago, that have a light "apple" smell coming out of them. She has had wet spot before, but in this case there is no contamination visible. There are small spots of mycelium starting. Does this smell always mean wet spot? Substrate is vermiculite and rye flour.

Thanks

If you can smell it through the jar that is not a good sign, wet spot is usually started by - you guessed it too much moisture in the jar

I would wait a few days just to make sure, but a tip for you next time, when mixing the jars saturate the verm, I do this by pouring water in until I see a small pool at the bottom then drain off the excess water, add the flour sry and mix it up, you will have the correct moisture content then.

And are you PC'ing or boiling?

I'm just boiling at this point. I am waiting for the arrival of a PC. The boiling has worked, but the success ratio has been marginal.

Thanks for the mixing tip. I'll try it next time...
