I got a marketing degree. Heres the thing i dont want to work in marketing to be honest. Im gonna try and get on the post graduate MSs in Computing later but i was thinking......
I have a life time of in depth hands on experience with computers, i know so much and have done so many things that i guess i am not far away from IT graduate level. So... im thinking i can always ad on my CV
Qualification: BA Marketing WITH Computing My dimploma simply states Marketing Administration, but so what i know that we did a number of IT units during the course they did not put that, what im trying to say is if employer asks where is your IT on your diploma i say they sismply did not put all the units that i ve done, they simply say first major. But i will put IT in my CV.
Yeah so im pretty good with IT, i might knot know C++ to a high level or might not be expert in JAVA on the level of Bill Gates but i know IT to a good level, to a level where i believe i CAN work in IT industry.
So what im thinking, i will touch up my CV, and start applying to low skill IT jobs, and of thoses there are planty. Do you think it will work?
ANyone who works in IT whats the present day demand there? Do you REALLY need to know EVERYTHING to work there, i know a bit about networking a bit about programming, i know some databases and a lot of system design, Do you think i might be ok?

IT positions suck these days. Pay varies, job security is slim to none, and open positions that pay well are about as plentiful as flying pigs.
If you want to do IT work you're better off learning how to become a manager and manage an IT dept. IT guys are the first to go in company layoffs, believe me, ive been layed off three times along with 5 or 10 other IT guys.

And to see everything else is to become an understanding molecule in evolution, a conscious tool of the universe. And I think every human being should be a conscious tool of the universe. . . . -JG i really am glad you came back to us instead of taking the other path. *hug* -A_S (RIP your final words to me will never be forgotten)

i work in an IT department, i work for the city. High end position too.
Let me start off by saying - first off programming and C++ has nothing to do with IT. I mean it falls under the IT cat, but thats more of a "programmer" job, which in return is Higher position then an IT employee, at least your standard help desk tech.
And is the demand high - depends on where your located and also what you can bring to the table. The industry has fallen dramatically due to the boom a few years back - where everyone thought IT was the way to go.
I know in our neck of the woods , the field is very low now. Can you get an IT job with your current expierence - probally not and if you could it would be a very low end job IMO. Something like a "tape manager", "help desk level 1", "tech support", or maybe even a "data techinican". But nothing that will bring you good pay - most places these days will start off at the simple 10-15 an hour, which is nothing IMO.
And even if you can get in, most of the time to go up the scale in the IT field thats when it depends on how much expierence you have. You wont get to a sys admin, or even network system support based on a "my knowledge" and a "A+ cert" i'll tell you that.
My opinion is - yea sure go ahead and attempt it. I think you should pursue at least another degree in the field though and expierence is a big thing in the IT field. Or if you do not want to go that route - get on board and attempt at some certifications.
Expierence is MAJOR key in the field, i have 6 years expierence, some certs, and a Assoc degree in computer network administration. I have been hired much more faster then a friend with a Bach Degree in Computer Systems who has NO expierence what so ever - actually hes been out of school now for 2 years and is making 10.00 an hour at some low end IT job.
So that just shows you, but believe me whatever you want to do...just make sure you like doing it. Because thats all that matters in the job field.

this is a good idea, but again you'd have to have some expierence IMO in the IT industry as well.

You should do a search on monster for "Entry level IT" or even "help desk" because that usaully is the entry level position.
But off the top of my head and with expierence - -Hardware expierence -Software expierence -Customer service skills -Some background expierence in the field whether it be fixing computers or working on a network
So i mean, basically an A+ cert with a N+ cert and some basic knowledge could put you on the list as a candidate....doesn't mean the next guy in line with a degree or more couldn't get it from you though.

I have a marketing degree, as well, but I have a marijuana felony, so I really can't do much with it. Hence, me being a bartender.

c/c++/java would be helpful for higher level programming jobs. knowledge of linux-os,mysql,apache,perl/cgi,php,html,etc is a must for any web programming job. knowledge of linux-os/m$-os and various programs would be needed for any help desk type job..

It'll give you a boost, but not as much as experience will. I work a low level "help desk" position, and get paid jack shit. 9.25. Honestly, I think you'd be better off perhaps supporting yourself with an IT job, while trying to find some kind of an internship (at least) in marketing.
Of course, it is a little interesting dealing with all the that come in. But, most of the time you just want to beat them with a shovel while they're trying to tell you how they think you should fix the problem.
