I rent a two-bedroom apartment with a roommate. I haven't lived at home since September of 2001 when I went to college. Spent two years in the dorms, and then lived in my own apartment for 2 years before moving in with my current roomie.

In another part of New York City, the borough of Queens where I was born and raised. I actually moved to Manhattan on August 25th of 2001, and in my second week of college the Twin Towers went down. 19 blocks from where I was dorming, too.

I think you need to just randomly up and leave. Move far enough from home that moving back would be a hell of a chore. I moved over an hour away from home and have never been happier. Though having a car was nice, I could afford that at home. haha.

Yeah...we heard a "clap" when the first plane hit and looked out our window, me and my roommate, which looked downtown towards the towers. You could see a big gaping flaming hole, but not that big, I thought a commuter private jet had crashed into the tower. In the time it took to eat breakfast in the eatery downstairs the second plane had hit, I didn't find that out till much later though.
In the middle of Italian class that morning the janitor busts the door open and yells "Terrorists have attacked the Twin Towers and the Pentagon, downtown is being evacuated, get out now and start walking uptown."
I used to always carry my handicam with me, so I whipped it out and walked downtown instead, filming people's reactions. It was a surreal day.

i haven't lived with my parents since fall of 2002, when i moved to norway. although i'd come back for christmas and what not, and then would stay at my parents, i've since then lived in dorms, and in flats that i rented with friends. rent in some places i lived was insane (had a flat for what would be considered a good price in denmark, 3 people were each paying >$700 a month) and in michigan is cheap as hell (in a duplex with 3 other people, we each pay less than $300/month) - but my parents live out in the rural suburbs, and i'd rather not disturb them by coming home drunk at 3am, so don't really consider living with them an option...

you plus your roomate, or $900 each?
kalamazoo is dirt cheap (or, the student ghetto is dirt cheap really).. except for people who have lived here all their lives, everybody realizes that they are getting a damn good deal w/ cost-of-living
nyc is only #13 on the 50 costliest cities in the world, copenhagen is #8, which makes me feel better about how much money i spent living there.

Yeah, actually our rent is on the low end of things for the LES. If I was to live out in Brooklyn I'd save a bunch on rent - but spend it on subway and many late night drunken cab rides anyway.
My rent is totally worth it though cause my neighborhood is super uber kewl.

I'm on my own but my mom recently (3 months) moved in with me. It really sucks ass cause she can't work right now (back surgery) and I'm supporting her. Weird as shit cause I'm having trouble with the role now. I act more like the parent. And damn feeding another person sucks. Besides that, she cleans sometimes which is cool.
My rent runs $775 with no utilities included, 3bd 2bth.

Me and my Roomie rent a place here. We pay 650 each a month, but the place is HUGE.
I've seen pictures of OMR's place, and his entire apartment is like, the size of our living room. Plus, we're 2 blocks from the lake w/ a veiw of the city. Very cool...

I've rented since i got out...
but I'm trying pretty hard to buy the house/property that i spent some years growing up in..3bed/1bath..it's a small house but we made it look amazing back in the day...it needs some restoring but it's a great place...
and it sits on 4acres,2 or 3 of which are wooded, and was once a salvage yard in the early 40's-late60s....so yea...it's basically heaven
