Damn Liz, that blows! I had no idea that you were hating your job so much. Fuck that guy! He sounds uber shady and so, maybe you should wait on a check before high tailing it. Good luck! Sorry about the short post, but I have to leave for work.

That wouldn't go over too well. It's been 2 weeks and he was looking for someone when he found her.
That's my if I get fired line, "I don't care, I was lookin for a job when I found this one."

Again, he would not fire me, and I swear at him all the time when he deserves it. He backs down right away when I stand up to him for the most part, but I HATE having to be on my guard all the time, wondering what I'm going to get screamed at about for no reason next. Every day when I take the train home I'm close to tears because I'm so stressed out and tired. It's just not worth it.

Liz, quit this job.
I'd go to work today (if you're not already there), and tell him "I'm quitting, and I want my paycheck ASAP. If I don't get the money I've worked for, I will report you and your crooked practices."
If you have nothing solid to report him on, get something to report him on. Blackmail is awesome when you're using it against sketchy twats like this guy.

Regardless if the guy has no backbone, he signs the checks and is shady too, I don't think he'd bat an eye firing you. But don't let me tell you about your business. I'm just offering caution. You either want to work there or you don't. You know where things are headed so plan accordingly.

Yeah, the real dillema is whether I want to work next week to increase the chances of getting my paycheck. I feel like if I'm not here there's a much smaller chance of him paying me what I'm owed. What do you guys think? Even though i owe HIM nothing, I feel kind of bad not giving ANY notice, because it screws over the customers AND the other employees. Then again, I've been here only 2 weeks, so giving 2 weeks notice is out of the question
My contract specifically says that I have to write something up and sign it to give notice, so I guess i'll type something up, ask him what he thinks is reasonable for notice, and get my ass out of here. I now have 2 interviews for next week, 1 on Monday, and another on Friday for a full time underwriting position, which would be awesome if I got it. We'll see.
So, what are your thought on whether I should work next week or not and wait til I get my check to split?

I duno if its the same in the states as it is in canada, but most jobs up here have a 30 day probation, 30 days in which they can fire you for no reason, or you can leave for no reason with no notice.. Check into that.

My contract says that I have a 90 day probation period that we both have the right to terminate the employment for any reason. So I'm well within that. I guess I should just give maybe like a week notice, and tell him I want my check on Thursday to include next week as well.

"Now that I've written this up, I want to leave as soon as possible. I'll give you half a week." or something.
Obviously you're getting fired, and it sounds like this office is pretty used to getting screwed over, so I wouldn't feel too horrible about bolting. Just make sure you're stern when you mention the paycheck getting to you.

I called my boss on his cell and told him I need to speak to him when he comes in. He asked what was up, I told him I would talk to him in person...he got all nervous but said ok, that he'd be in later on. Than he called back and asked the secretary if I was ok, and if she knew what I wanted to talk to him about She told him everything was cool as far as she knew (even though I told her what i was doing)...and she said he's all freaked out about what's going on. Good. I'm glad he knows something's up. I'm quitting as soon as he gets in, and I'm telling him that even though I don't OWE it to him, I'll be here next week if he wants me to be - but that I expect my regular salary for any days that I am here, and that i expect to be paid in full on Thursday when the accountant comes in. I know he might try to convince me to stay, and I don't want to hear it. All I want is my money and to get the fuck out of this shithole. If he tries to not pay me, I'm going to sue him and report him to the better business bureau. I'll tell him this upfront if he starts acting like he doesn't owe me anything.
Just wanted to update you guys.

Nice.
If he tries to convince you to stay, pretend to mull it over. Tell him that getting your paycheck on time and having it NOT bounce would be a great incentive.
Then, when you've been paid, quit anyway.
I mean, you know, or don't. Just an idea.

I did it, I quit.
Woot.
He first tried to change my mind, then tried making me feel bad, and then got mad and started name calling "you're acting childish by taking my screaming at you personally". Shit like that. I just nodded, and smiled, and thanked him for the opportunity, and told him it just wasn't working out for me, and I was quitting.
He might want me to come in next week and work while they work on finding a replacement. I told him if he did want me to, he would have to include that money on my check on Thursday, because when I leave here I don't want him owing me anything. He nodded and said that was fair. So I'm waiting to see what he decides about next week, and either way, I told him I would be in to pick up my check as soon as it was ready for me.

Thanks everyone!
Like I said i have 2 interviews next week. The downside to switching jobs - the uncertainty as to whether I can be on AIM/The Shroomery or not
I think I'll live either way
