Spore prints....

I recently purchaced one of those mushroom growing kits and the spore print (psylocibe cubensis) is from 97'. I failed miserably in trying to grow the mycillium in the pitri dishes provided. Now I'm wondering if I am just completly inept or if the print is unusable. Do spore prints expire? If so how long will one stay fertile?

I think it was the print.

Prints can last that long but lose viability over time. The kitsellers really should really be providing fresher prints, what a rip!

How long have the spores been sitting on the agar plates? Sometimes old prints just require longer to germinate the spores. But 97 is a very old print to be SELLING.

If stored properly, prints can last a long time. If exposed to heat, light, and a bunch of air, they won't last long. Keep them cool, dry, and in a dark place in an air tight bag. I've germinated spores that were four years old without a problem, but they did take a little longer to germinate.

I left the spores on the plates for about a month (I just kept hoping) and all I got was mold (I'm prety sure it was mildew). After a month the last plate I had made was taken over so I gave up and decided to start over from skratch.
