>>>>"rahz ,Use quart jars (as mentioned). I've read many posts where old hands say jars larger than quarts are a no no." are you sure about that ? who said it?

Not sure who said it, but I've read it several times. It would be more efficient for giant PCs, and obviously works fine under optimal conditions, but they seem to be finicky from what I've read. More likely to stall or something.

lol i own that book and have read a good portion of it and i do use it.

1/2 gal jars work fin as long as you have spawn but when starting with agar or lc or spore they can be troublesome do to so few knock points (cause slower spread of myc. and about ten posts up i did say that i am going to use quart jars.

i do use a pretty big pc (26 quart aa) but i did the math and for this model it's more efficant to use quart jars anyway.

cappa- the dude that said to put boiling water into a pot with wbs to "simmer" and to soak in one easy prosses to get max water retention. so i asked about the plastic bucket being able to withstand boiling temp. so i could use the ones i have instead of going out and buying some more big pots (that are quite expencive unless you go to thrift shops).

did you simmer your wbs after soaking??? also i think co2 build up or lack of moisture in the jars could be culprit. try to flip the jars upside down, and or inject a 1/2 - 1 cc of water into the center of your cake (sterilized of course)

Oh, you wanna steep em like that.. hmm.. I say give it a shot. Plastic bucket will prolly work just fine. Do it outside the first time though.

so you think that it would make 5% of the grains pop?

72 degrees is fine for colonization. WBS not prepared to a tee will be more prone to contaminate by bacterium at temps of 80+ degrees. Stick with room temperature for colonization. Then after you get the hang of it, you then can start to use warmer temperatures for incubating grains. 80 degrees is the max for me.

Maybe I dunno.. never done it like that before. The important thing is to make sure those babies are hydrated. Get close, inspect, smell, taste... whatever it takes.

I say give it a go now you have all these ideas.
WBS soaked and simmered. Inspected alot until they are done.
quart jars.
lower incubation temps.
Of course, like you have been doing, follow your good cleanliness techniques.

Good luck,

And make sure they are drained very well before you load the grain into the jars. Excess water from improperly drained grains will cause problems.
