Agreed. Don't boil. Don't even lightly boil. Steep them, like tea.
Stir them often and observe them for hydration. When 5% of your large seeds burst, it's done.

I saw a tek by agar i think?????? anyway he said you can soak and simmer your wbs by:
putting X amount of WBS in a pot. add boiling water and cover. let sit for 6-8hours i think. The poster said that the "hot water bath" cleans the wbs, and since its boiling and the pot is covered, it does a nice job of giving your WBS proper water levels.
you can put your pot of WBS anywhere in your house if you need to keep incognito

>>>>but i still find it hard to beleive that you incubate at 72 degrees and if you do i'd think that it would take like a month for them to colonise
I place them in the box the jars came in and cover with a towel. They sit at room temp, I shake after a week, and they're finished about 2 weeks after that. Once you have a couple jars stuffed with dry shrooms, you're not in a hurry any more.
With the jars packed together, and surrounded by cardboard, the actual substrate temp is around 80 once they get going. I've proven this with an infrared temp gun. I'm not suggesting you do this, I just wanted to make the point that high temps aren't necessary for grain jars to colonize. When people quote 84/86 degrees air temp, they're quoteing a PF guide.

Lol if your the same dude that was asking about 2000 jars the other day I did a little math here with jars, brf vermiculite and bottled water your looking at spending around $3,000. With $3,000 I could grow well over 1,000 lbs of shrooms seeing how poo is free and wbs is 20 lbs for $8.00.

even if it does have fungiside on it why would it grow to half and then stop and i'm pretty sure that fungiside will only stop spores from starting not mycelium and i have never went from spore to grain directly.
oust seems like it would be ok but my sterrile teckniques are not flaud as i see, i have no contam except for the last batch of arar and i believe that to be because i use an open bag of plates that i thought were still sterrile but i believe that they were not now. that was stupid but some were not contamitated till they were trancferd once.

Um.. some of those buckets have a weird lining in them, and they are kind of a thin metal. You could try it but do it outside with a 'turkey cooker' propane heater or u might end up with alot of water and WBS on your kitchen floor!
Do you have a PC? It won't hurt it if you 'steep' your grains inside of it.If you don't have a PC, you are wasting your time with whole grains(WBS, rye, and similar) IMO. Others may disagree.

Penningtons several types of bird seed. Not all of it is fortified or has 'Bird-Kote'. I bought Penningtons that didn't say anything about bird-kote on the bag and it works fine.

Well shit.. if you need to steep 48 quarts at a time.. hmm.. First idea that pops into my head is a custom rigged pipe with holes in it rigged to a cheap BBQ propane regulator. Placed under a trough.
2nd idea would be a turkey cooker type propane setup under a 55 gallon drum.
Out of curiousity, how were you planning on using a plastic bucket to heat grains and water?

"rahz ,Use quart jars (as mentioned). I've read many posts where old hands say jars larger than quarts are a no no." are you sure about that ? who said it?
and as for temp here are the facts you can conlanise jars at temps from 50 to 90 but of corse want o try to be optimal, but as you cant see its better to be 82 than 88

dude my sujestion wouls be to get the mushroom cultivator and read it cover to cover 3 times and then come back to this site. there is some much great info in there and it got me off to a great start and i still look at the book now and then
