Substrate Method Transferring question
    #5407323 - 03/16/06 08:09 AM (17 years, 10 months ago)

Reading instructions that tell of the great advantage with substrate about how you can save some of the colonized substrate for colonization of new jars; my question is how do you go about doing that?

Aren't you imposing a HUGE risk of contamination by opening the jar to add colonized substrate? (versus using the syringe through holes to inoculate?)

How do you "add" the substrate... just put it on top in the jar, then re-seal? Or am I misunderstanding all of this?

You should have a flowhood or glove box. You probably want to start with a glovebox. Just do some searches, there's lots of info.

You should get lysol and got to a confined area (bathroom, glovebox) and sterilize the area and perform this procedure..don't forget to wash you hands! :headbanger:

Thanks I did a search on "glovebox" and "reuse substrate"

I found out how to make a glovebox but still nothing detailing what should be done?? You mix the substrate with your "glovehands" in the jar or what??

Thanks.

i did a grain to grain transfer in my closet after spraying oust. i washed my hands with antibacterial soap, and i washed everything i was going to touch with alcohol. i manually picked grain from one jar and put it in the others. its been 2 days and the jars i transferred to are at about 30% colonization. it appears around my sterility isnt a huge issue, but that doesnt mean it will work for everyone.

also in lieu of a flowhood or glovebox, you can use a clear plastic bag...

Chefmushroom:

Substrate transfers are for grain techs only, just in case you didn't know that...

Right. If you have grains all you have to do is pour some colonized grains in.
