Working on Agar's Liguid Culture tek

Just hit up Wal Mart and picked up supplies for Agar's Liquid Culture tek. I got Evenflo baby bottles but they're the ones with the bent neck and east grip rubber on the side. This wont melt in my PC or anything, right? Also, instead of marbles I picked but some fishing weights that are about the size of a marble. This should work, right? Thanks and wish me luck!

Just dont let the rubber touch the sides of the PC or it will melt and fuck up your pc, weights should work fine you can use anything, broken pieces of glass, Ive even used rocks before.

If those weights are lead, take them back.
Go to the craft section and ask for glass beads of something like that.
Lead = Bad for LC's

One of the greatest reasons for using those bottles is that they are microwavable. Ease of use, courtesy of Agar.

How about a coin? A penny perhaps? Will that be a good replacement?

He suggests microvaving in 'waves'. A few minutes on, some off, few minutes on again.. etc.

Do you have any proof that lead will have adverse effects on LC or is that just an assumption? I assume that there is no where near enough lead in a couple lil weights to be toxic to mycelium. And I also know that mushrooms and mycelium do not absorb heavy metals.

I go high until boiling and then low. IME doing it in waves with too much time between nuking can lead to superheated LCs that can explode

...."And I also know that mushrooms and mycelium do not absorb heavy metals."
Uhm, sorry, but they do precisely that, and they do it quite well. Well enough in fact, that they are cultivated for this purpose. Try this book.
Lead in particular is not concentrated as well as cadmium, arsenic, mercury and such, in fact, lead removal is quite a problem, but it is absorbed readily and efficiently by several species. I would use broken glass.

Lead is toxic. Don't use it. Do you live in a 'glassless' part of the world? Got a dollar store near you? Buy some kids marbles. Maybe you can find some broken car windows from a wreck or something? Hell, those will be already broken up for you! In the United States we are surrounded by glass everywhere. It's not a rare commodity.

Thanks guys, I spoke with agar and he advised the same; to use broken glass. I'm just lazy becuase I went to Wally World yesterday and couldn't find a simple jax's game with marbles. Probably wasn't looking hard enough. Lucky enough for me, my roommate had an empty french onion dip jar in the fridge. Busted that baby into pieces and boiled the glass chunks for 5-10 mins. PC is cooling now... here's to my first LC!

LEAD CAUSES CANCER AND HEALTH PROBLEMS. AT LEAST IN THE STATE OF CALIFORNIA...
as one who enjoys fishing, i can vouch for the fact that any pack of lead weights will state this fact.
will using lead weights in your LC cause cancer or health defects? prolly not. does lead cause cancer or health defects? definitely so.
it's not fucking hard to find marbles, dragon tears or broken glass. for real.
