Cracked Jars
    #5405286 - 03/15/06 07:19 PM (17 years, 10 months ago)

Hi,

whilst sterilizing (boiling in a pan) some PF-TEK jars, i left them unattended a bit too long, allowing all the water to evaporate. Without thinking, I added more cold water, yes you guessed it a lot of the jars cracked due to the temperature diffrence. However they still stay together as a jar, they just have small cracks on the bottom. Does anyone think they're still useable?

I originally thought no chance because contaminents could get in through the small cracks, but they are pretty small, and I generally leave a few air holes anyway at the top of jars.

thanks

Alex

Well, it's probably a subjective answer but my .02 is that you probably should get new jars. Maybe if you could wrap something around the jars it MAY help (ie.. saran wrap or some shit) I can't guarentee it will, though. Just my .02

sivad, in the upper right corner of each individual post is an 'edit' button. Keeps you from having to duplicate a post if you just have a simple edit.

Cracks are cracks. It is a breach in the exterior of an otherwise sealed environment. They are toast.

***Edit: I am basing this information on thick glass drinking glasses that I have overheated and cracked in the same way. It held water for a while, but over night, it all drained out. The glass later fell apart. Take this information for what it is worth.

djalexr; You're fine, just use them for this colonization\incubation cycle and then get rid of them. Chances are they'll stay together even past the point where you spank the cakes out of them ~ and if so they'll most definately still be watertight, but I wouldn't recommend using them again. Depends on how many cracks you have in each and how severe - I'm assuming that these are 1/2 pint widemouths. Happens to me all the time. You're fine.
