Herpetology & Herptoculture

Hey all. Just thought I would see if there were any other people here who share my passion for exotic fauna. I had a recent addition to the family in the way of my new son, so my collection has been trimmed down accordingly. Out with the monitors and most all my culbrids. My 7ft central american boa put out 19 infertal ova this year, so I think she may be done as a breeder. My 2 yearling columbian pastels are growing at an incredable rate, and I hope to be able to breed them winter 2007. My big boy is loving life after coming to my house from a rescue in VA. He has been with me right about 2 years now, after bieng sent from rescue to rescue. He is a 9ft 30lb peruvian red-tail, with ascar on his back about an inch wide and near 4ft long. I was told he got burnt in a small cage with a hot light and no hid in there. Well I will check back with you all later.

I had two ball pythons which I raised from hatchlings to about 3 ft. until I had to go live with my dad who says "son, there is only 2 things in this world that I hate and fear.... the first one is snakes, and the second is snakes".... So, I gave them to a friend I never kept in touch with.
Their names were Kaa and Jester.

I used to breed native Lichinura (Rosy Boas) and various Culbrids (King snakes). I just don't have the time for it now. I also got in trouble with the law for fishing without a license. Part of the probation was that I couldn't own any native reptiles for 3 years.

Sometime...
In my endeavors in herpetology, I plan on raising... and perhaps breeding, some Bufonoids.
The big ones from the Sonoran, ya dig?

I'm an avid 'odd pet' lover but would not label myself a herpa-* or anything else.
I just purchased a lovely baby ball python so I can get my little girls (ages 6 and 3) used to odder pets and not be afraid of things lik snakes.
They named him Shiny. No special patern or color, just a common ball.
had his first meal tonight. First time I've dealt with frozen mice as most all of my nakes except a few have been wild caught and would never take the fake non-running meecers.
I did catch a sonoran desert toad on my font porch about 5 or 6 years ago. Those fuckers are huge.
and *NO* I did no milk it etc etc since everyone always asks. I caught it shoed my kids and let it go.

growing up i aspired to be a professional herpetologist.......my room looked a freakin' zoo horned frogs, red-eye tree frogs, whites tree frogs, red tail, boa, flying gecko, tokay gecko, iguana, bearded dragon, fish tanks.....many others, many years ago, long lost to memory......
not sure why i ever got out of keeping exotics as a hobby....got too expensive i suppose....puberty hit, other interests came about and the animals were fazed out
was thinking about getting some red-eyes again......maybe setting up a nice vivarium with live plants, waterfall and such......that would look wicked in the living room

There would only be you and your memories... the choices you've made, and the people you've touched. If this world were to end there would only be you and him and no-one else. " .............. "MAN! You know there aint no such thing as left over crack!"

I really want a climbing snake, like an emerald boa but all the rep store ones are WAY to expensive.
I need a CHEAP way to get a cool climber that can be handled pretty easily (kids) and isnt a nightmare to care for.

i used to be really into reptiles and such. i had a ball python and almost got a jungle carpet. has breadwed dragons, crested geckos a bunch of other stuff too.
i'm through that phase now though, but i wouldn't mind having a snake now that i think about it.
also, nobody should ever buy anything from a pet store. ever. those places take the worst care of their animals possible. i bought my first ball python from a pet shop and it had fucking mites that i had to get rid of.

AAAhhh the joys of owning exotic animals. Right now I have 6 red-tail boas, 2 nelsons milk snakes, 1 african grey parrot, 3 degu's. I am going to be letting go of the Nelsons and maybe a couple boas. The degu's should have babies any time now, and they will go fast. Those guys are hard to find around here.
