You're right, someone is trying to hack you, check out this page for a fix from Symantec:

the patch gives me an error saying the service pack version of the system is newer than the update im applying and theres no need to install it.

it wont let me override.

ive actually already been to that page and tried it.
im still getting constant attack messages. it SAYS they are getting blocked. but ive also found 5 adware threats out of nowhere today

How do you connect to the internet? Through a modem or a router?

i dont really understand what you are asking.

i think its a modem, but what is a router?

i have cable. it goes through what i call a modem and then into my network port

also im still getting constant attacks.

I assume these are failed attempts since my virus/worm blocker keeps saying they are blocked.
also i figure if the intrusion attempts succeeded, the appearance of attacks would cease.

but then i really dont know.

all i know is evry 2-8 minutes my worm detection utility loggs an intrusion attempt.

and apparently this type of attack exploits a vunerability in windows that i am already defended against.
but then, really, how do i know? Im not a hacker so i dont know how they think.

how do they do this? is it just some program that automatically targets you and attacks or is it something more deliberate? Like, does someone set it upon you and it just keeps attempting access until it slips by?

i certainly dont know anybody who hacks and i don't associate with people I don't know so if its not randm, it MUST be related to my online activity.

and about the only "shady" stuff I do is right here on the shroomery. that and i registered on Poppies.org the other day, but i havent made any posts yet.

:P

hmmm, ill stop obsessing over this when the attacks stop i suppose.

if youre part of a cable network thats common. the way cable networks are set up is basically like a big local network, so data bounces inside like crazy. if youre firewall is blocking it, dont worry bout it. its some script kiddy scanning the network like an idiot.

if youre on a dsl network it may be something, but its doubtful. check your machine for spyware or viruses. you could have something thast trying to communicate outside your machine, but youre firewall isnt letting the response back in.

see if you can pinpoint the program thats doing it...

ive *heard* that zonealarm isnt that great. i used to use it, but on a number of recomendations i switched to sygate personal firewall. also zone alarm gave me a lot of trouble with some unusual networking protocols i was messing with in my home network.

anyways, this is the deal with software firewalls. you arent safe with them. if someone wants on your machine and knows what he/she is doing, theyre gonna get on there. the software firewall does 2 great things for you. a) it keeps viruses and spyware under control to a certain extent and b) it keeps little script kiddies out to a certain extent. also if youre using pirated software, you can keep it from phoning home

anyways if youre seriously scared, buy yourself a hardware firewall. theyre expensive, but they will keep out 90% of the hackers out there. another option is linux, but hey not everyone can deal with it. i mean using kde or gnome is easy enough, but configuring linux is a lot of work if youre raised windows. plus you have to wait like 3 years after a game is released to play it in linux lol

an intermediate step of security is to use a router with security options built into it. not jsut a crappy built in firewall, but packet inspection, and even a dmz. i think this is the best option since chances are no one is singling out your pc. youre just one pc in a huge scan some guy is doing for vulnerabilities taht youve already patched.
