i was given some left over brown rice flour by a friend. he hasnt grown shrooms in about a year, so the flour is way out of date. can i still use this flour even if it is out of date?

Brown rice has a higher fat content I think, You want to make sure it's not rancid before using. Grind a little and look for an odd smell that is NOT like ground rice.
Do you know how he had it stored?

To be on the safe side, Brown Rice only costs like $2 for a 2 pound bag at meijer or HellMart You should just grind that up in a coffee grinder or a food processer, Plus I heard that it is a tad better than the flour itself

he had it sorted in its orignal bag, and then that in another plastic bag
it is flour, not whole rice grains

I realize that you have powder, but you can make your own using the grains. Just grind them up in a coffee grinder or a food processor/blender and VOILA! Homemade Brown Rice Flour!
Check this out http://www.shroomery.org/index.php/par/23593/pag/1 It talks about homemade BRF about the 10th or 11th paragraph down. I used ot do this for every PF style jar and I couldn't have asked for better(and cheaper) results.

Flour is worse. Once you break the grains, you expose the fats to the air. It can turn rancid quickly from then on. I'd trash it, but that's just me.

one more question...
i got a little excited and made my brf/verm mixture and packed it into quart jars. im still waiting on my needles to arrive to make my spore syringes, so i probly wont be able to innoc the jars for a week max. can i store these in a cool dry place untill i can innoc? or would it have been wiser to wait untill i am completely ready?
thanks

A blender works in place of a grinder, you know.

I would PC them now, then put them up in a clean, dry location till you are ready for them.
Do you have holes punched in the lids?

How are you going to inoculate without holes? If you PC them like this, they will create a vacuum in the jars and suck all the spores out of your syringe when you do incoulate them....or you will suck in contams when you poke a hole in it.

OIC! Well...I am not sure what to do then....If you PC them with the real lids on, then they will keep for years. I can't speak for what will happen if you just use the foil.

so if i wanted to pc them with the real lids on, i would have to punch a few holes in the top before i placed them in the pc? then to store thewm i would have to cover the lids with foil after?
its just that the lids are a bit different. the center peice is seperate from the outer ring of the lid. and i dont think i can punch holes on the edge because of this fact.

what if i PC'ed them with the foil ontop, and the lids in there seperately. then when i take them out, take off the foil and put the lids back on for a good seal for storage? then once i want to innoc, i take the lid off and cover with foil again and innoc through the foil. i suppose all the taking off of lids would leave a fair risk of contam
maybe i shoul just stick with foil the wholle way through
