Heating Pad ?

I just have a quick question for everyone. I use a tub as a incubator and i have a heating pad under it but the medium setting only gets it to like 76 degrees and the high setting takes it to the 90's. How can I make my incubator a little colder so that its around 82 instead of 92?? Thanks for the help in advance. And yes I know alot of people dont like heating pads buts its all I got and want.

Why don't you try setting it on top of the incubator and testing how that works? I use a heating pad on my FC, and it set it about perfect on top, with the writing facing up.

Or what about putting your tub a few feet above the pad? The air buffer inbetween would lessen your risk of fire and decrease the inherant temperature of the above tub by an amount that you could control via height of tub from the pad and other buffering material variables.

'a few feet?' hmm.. must be in a warm enough room that you don't need a heating pad.
If putting it on the top doesn't work. Use a few towels as a buffer between the tub and pad.

yep, make a cavity. elevate the tub with some boardes or bricks, that way the heat rises into the tub, also you could put a solid non melting thing on it to muffle the heat. I usually use a towel, or a heat rock.(heat rock not plugged in of coarse).

I used a heating pad, could never get the damn thing right. It can also dry out your jars if underneath them. The best I accomplished was to lay down the pad, lay down a few towels, place the lid (upside down) on the towels, place jars on lid, and place the tub on top of it all. Having the tub upside down seemed to help keep the warm air from rising out of the tub. I still had a problem with drying out when I switched to bird seed. The seeds at the very bottom of the jar would dry and not colonize.
Bottom line, heating pads suck.

zoo med makes some great heating pads. i use the smallest one, its 4x5 or something and keeps temps perfect. it is an always on heating element but very low level which is what i need and normal heating pads were too much

Ok I have a new Problem Now... Now After trying what you guys said last night I but a towel down under my tub and it keeps it at about 84. But thats on the bottom of the tub. I have my temp censor between the tub and the Bags(right under the middle bag) Thats 84 but the air in the tub is only about 71 72 tops. Is it ok to let the bottom get hotter so the air gets colder? or what should I do???

Once you have it around 82, 83. You can throw a blanket over the top of it as well. Then here's the trick "Leave it alone". Just check temps a few times a day quickly.

I have a thermomater on a sting and I just leave it in there so I dont need to open it to check the temps. My problem is that my bags are on the floor of the tub and the Heating Pad is under the tub and the floor of the tub is getting to be like 84 degrees and the air is 71. Do you think if I put like a little shelf in there to raise it It would help???? I have one that I can raise it like 3/4 of an inch off the bottom. do you think thats high enough off the bottom???

One more layer of blanket under the tub. You're almost there. Once it's 82 on the floor, the myc will take care of the rest, provided your warm air isn't escaping.

thats not my problem. I dont think im wording this right. My tupperwares floor is 84 degrees. The air in the tub is 71 and I have a blanket on top. how do I make the air get to 84 without burning the bottoms of the bags. Sorry for the confusion. I tried putting a little shelf in there about 2 or 3 inches off the floor of the tub do you think that will help to not burn the bags and now I can just let the air warm up.

Ya that'll work. Once the myc gets going your incubator will warm up several degrees. Thats why I'm saying use another towel. If the floor is 84, it's still a bit warm IMO. You'll probably be alright just the way it is. I'd just rather have an extra day or two and be SURE of good colonization rather than dry out my jars.

If money isn't an issue or you can find a used cooler for cheap or free. Use it as the outer Tub for the TiT. IMO too much heat is lost with a standard TiT unless you keep it in a warm room or inside your house somewhere.
I keep mine in a barn like structure that gets pretty damned cold. So insulation is a must for me.

if your fruiting chamber is near and is a pmp throw the tank heater in there... it'll stir the air up and keep it all even. i did this and it works well

I'm sceptical of using heaters to heat the air. That can dry the air inside and cause your jars to dry out prematurely.

OK, So ive tried alot of different ways to make this heating pad work and I got the air to be 79.1 and I just need like 3 or 4 more degees. any Ideas how to get 3 or 4 more degrees. And yes im already using a blanket over it and a blanket under the heating pad but there is nothing between the pad and the tub for me to remove to make it hotter. Any ideas what can make it go up just a little more???
