Soaking WBS
    #5404824 - 03/15/06 05:54 PM (17 years, 10 months ago)

Okay WBS has 3 different type of usuable seeds if my understanding is correct. The sun flower seeds are better to be tossed out. Anyways, while soaking, are ALL the seeds supposed to expand? The larger ones have expanded almost completely after 24 hours, but the small ones dont seem to really soak in any water, I cant almost even see a difference in them...?

You know how top ramen noodles is opaque when you first take it out of the package. Once it's cooked for 2.5-3.5 minutes it becomes somewhat translucent. Well that's what happened to my smaller seeds. They became somewhat translucent. That was after a short simmer though.

Hope it helps

LOL at the ramen metaphor..

So they became translucent but did not really expand?

I just tried to squeeze one of the little seeds and they are still a bit hard. Its been like 28 hours now since they have been soaking in a room enviroment of about 78 degrees.

Ive always been told that you can EASILY tell the Milo has expanded, I never really noticed the millet swelling though(not too much)
As long as you soak them for at least 24 hours you should probably be fine

I just dont wanna mess this up because my last attempt at WBS turnt into 24 quart jars of caca (shit). I simmered them and all the kennels popped. Still tried to proceed but everything got contaminated.

I just want this one to be perfect seeing as im doing 48 jars this time. Dont want to do all that worl for nothing.

Make sure when your simmering, youre not boiling. The exploded kernals are from the water being too hot. When I simmer, I let it start to steam a bit on high temp, then lower the temp enough to have the smallest boil possible(I may be wrong, but I dont get contams often)

Im using Agars technique and not simmering this time, thats why im trying to find out if those small seeds need to expand beforehand.

OHHHHHHHHHH I See....
Well, I can only say from my experiences from soaking and simmering using Doc's WBS tek.
I can say though, after my 24-36 hour soak, I did NOT realize the millet grown in size (very miniscule, if even at all)
The milo grew a LITTLE, but really expanded after simmering.

Hope that helped a little

Hey I didnt mean to offend you Cappa, I was laughing with you not at you..

I know you said they would become translucent but you did not specifiy if they would expand. They dont appear to be translucent.

 I was just being a smartass.
If simmering:
If the millet becomes translucent that means some of your grains have burst. So far, I stopped when roughly 5% of the larger grains were burst and the millet was translucent. I got 9 day colonization from this.
If just soaking:
You might be waiting quite awhile for that millet to expand.

I had the same problem when I simmered using doc's tek... all the jars turned contam on me. Try this East "Soak and Simmer" WBS Prep . I haven't tried it yet but I plan to after making a LC.

I did 5 jars of WBS to experiment.

I hate to say it but i simmered. The tiny millet seeds were not expanding whatsoever and were still hard. So i boiled some water, then put it on low and put the WBS in. Simmered it for about 10 minutes, and you know the rest of the process. MEh, I dont really like how WBS expands, very little as compared to rye alone. I think im going to bye some rye to do a 50/50 mix and add that extra moisture fluff with the rye for my next 43 jars......

Woot someone just knocked on the door, it was the Fedex guy. Just got my 30 lbs of Hpoo! Nice morning surprise at 10:09 am while having my wake and bake smoke..
