Endophytes?
    #540378 - 02/04/02 03:10 PM (22 years, 2 months ago)

The ryegrass my kangaroo bought at home depot to grow Ps. Mexicana on says on the bag that it is "Endophyte enhanced". It doesn't say that it's anti-fungal or anything, but is this a problem?

Thanks

It means it has nitrogen fixing bacteria in it. The usual overnight soak and pressure cook at 15 psi for 1 hour will kill them like all other bacteria.

Use a bit more precautions during sterilization than you normally would, but you should be fine. Think of your bag of seeds as a bag of bacteria. Keep it away from your grow setup. Pour the seeds into your jars/bags out in the garage or somewhere that is away from your normal work area. After you are done with the seeds, clean yourself before you renter your work area. All that dust from the bag of seeds contains a lot of bacteria just looking for a nice new home. Make sure you PC for an hour or more at 15-20 lbs. You might have to play around a bit with water content if you are increasing the cook time to balance it all out. It is always easier if you start out with clean medium to begin with, but that isn't always possible.
